Once this is a done deal there will be billions to put into programs that really matter to every citizen.
All the farmers and wilderness peoples of the north will not be running afoul of the law anymore. The city dwellers will have another media induced stress in their lives.

You know Jim, I'm not against have to register any guns... I'm against the part that the government said it would cost X and it actually cost 1000X to administer it. This should be a simple registry, something that anyoine can do and works. Like any business could buy for $5000. Get people to register their guns and voila you have you list. Let CO's have the ability to check the serial numbers quickly and enforce it on the spot. Really what is the problem with having the gun registered? If it didn't cost $75 per weapon and say only $3 or $5 would it make a difference to you and most people? or even if it was free?

Let's repeal registering cars while were at it. Let's forget about registering anything at all!

Scott, I see the reason for registering cars and maybe guns but why would we register anything else with the Government. Why should they care. And to Roberts point, turn it over to VISA and they will do it for about $3 and send the list to the Government by email.

It's all so meaningless really. Herein the US we register over 700,000 sex offenders, then assign one case worker for every 500 or so. As recent news reports verify, these sex offender are only mildly inconvenienced by all this, as they roll along practicing their profession of sexually assaulting women and children. That serial rapist recently found to have a dozen bodies at his house was visited y a case worker in September.

So the government claimed the program would cost $2,000,000 and the tab has exceeded a billion dollars? That's about how government works everywhere. They overstate some national problem, then enact some nonsense social program to lemming-like citizens, they promise them quantifiable social advancement and real results, they undersell the cost, overstate the results, overspend the budget to prove the real need for even more funding, then look for the next opportunity to "do good." Meanwhile, they create new bureaucracies and ministries to employ their supporters, friends and family.

JNickell good post, and some "common sense" from a citizen.

agreed - no point in making another pile of paper that no one reads. We used to until relatievly recently have to register dogs and have a license for them..............to this day I have yet to understand who cared enough to bother to read, but someone was employed to piss away money printing forms and administering it all. But over the pond in the UK, we do like our bits of paper - I get sent reams every year of government stuff about benefits I am not entitled to - I call up and ask if they need a return from me to show I am not entitled to them, they say no, thats fine, do nothing, I say, okay, do you want to stop sending me half a tree each year, they say, why, what if your circumstances change - I say then you will be the first to know...............then the forms arrive again.

Good discussion. My initial question is, "Why does the government want to register everyone's guns, and for what purpose?"

Does registering guns of law abiding citizens improve safety? What are we gaining by doing this? The bad guys "probably" aren't going to participate. Is it to collect revenue?

thanks, Chuck in Aiken, SC USA

The biggest billion dollar joke of the whole thing is all long gun owners must have a licence to carry. In order to get a licence you must pass a safety course. The licence also requires a criminal record check. In order to buy a gun you need a special firearms acquisition certificate. You cannot sell to someone unless they have a licence and FAC.

Our law enforcement people all ready had a way of knowing who was likely to have gun from the gun owner license data base.

Hand guns are already tightly controlled to the extent that an in depth criminal record and mental health check is done. Hand guns must be carried in a locked case to the range. A citizen licence to carry is unheard of. To own a hand gun you must be a member of a club that has a pistol range. Hand guns are registered to their owners and have been for a long time.

The way the registry worked was guns were registered to an individual, but the form did not reference the gun requiered owning licence.

I always thought it strange that owning you grandfather's long gun didn't require a licence, but the gun needed to be registered.
Licencing the owner makes sense as it is the owners that are responsible for the safety of the firearms.
It is strange that this registry of firearms did not have any ballistic information required.

Rightly so, in my opinion, and one of the reasons I believe why your firearms homicide rate is a sixth of that in the country below you.
