Hello, I just bought a 79 that had been repainted, I believe, a Brokland green. My eventual plans are to pull then engine, but until then I would like to clean up the engine compartment a bit without pulling the engine. My thought was to clean it as much as possible, mask things off and use inexpensive spray paint, if I can find one that is a fairly close match. Anything would be better than what is there now, a mixture of green overspray, origianal rusty brown paint and some minor rust. Oh and should I use some sort of rust remover for the surface rust or just try and wire wheel it off, then prime and paint? Does anyone know of a source that I can get some inexpensive spray paint like a Duplicolor that you can get for newer cars?

You can have Brookland's Green mixed at an automotive paint supply store. Some can even pre-load it into a spray cans for you. But... unless you know that what's on your car is Brookland's Green, you face a high probability of a mismatch to one degree or another. That said, the new paint is in the engine compartment and it may not be that noticeable.
I'm facing the same issue on my '76's engine compartment and it's also BG. I was thinking of (re)using Rustoleum Professional Hunter Green. I used it as a final coat on my floor pans and it was close enough for me.
Cheers,
Glen
Jon, here's a few links that will help you out. The 1st link just click on the color bar near the bottom of the page and see which color you might have. The 2nd link will give you the BLVC color code and the the years it was applied. With that information, go to the 3rd link and put in the vehicle year and on the next page, put the cursor on the color chart and it will magnify it for you. In the upper right corner of that page, you can put in the BLVC number as well as the colors name (I.E. Brrolklane Green, BRG etc.) and it'll show the paint thats available. You can even have them put it in an aersol can if you like. I just purchased some touch-up paint for mine and it was a very close match to the factory paint. Good luck in your project, I hope this helps.

Like Glen says....don't trust that it's actually Brooklands Green since it's a repaint. It could be close to correct - or it could be way off. I faced the same issue....mine was repainted by the PO and, even though the car was originally Brooklands Green I'm sure it probably wasn't 100% correct. I recently had some paint computer matched for mine and it's very, very close to what's on the car. If I didn't show you where I had repainted, you'd never see the difference. I can only see the difference in direct sunlight from a certain angle. I used single stage Nason paint from the local Colormatch/DuPont store. If you'd like, I can give you the codes off the label....
here's a good match and cheap useing this on my 67 b these are all ace ruststopper .international green / gloss black /harbour blue ,,,4 cups of the green ,1 cup+2oz of the black ,and 4oz of the blue... matched perf. $17
