I needed a little extra space when I went to the Thunder Bay show a couple of weeks ago so...
I flipped over the spare tire and used some thick rubber spacers (pieces of tire which may come in handy if one was to drop an exhaust mount) and big washers with the right size bolt for the tire hold-down... Voila ! Enough extra space within the tire rim to cary a bunch of spare parts !

Al, go to my website & you'll find a tip about how to do that <http://www.theautoist.com\tricks_in_the_trunk.htm>
I grabbed a 200sx space saver spare (thanks to Tony for the tip that it would fit) and flipped it over. It's a 15" space saver, so the outer diameter is actually about the same as the 14" full size spare (although not as deep). Anyway, it's just got a ton of room in the wheel area, more so than the 14" stock, while taking up slightly less room.
My spare has been turned upside down ever since I got the car. Makes the perfect place for spares, tools, etc. I put a piece of plexiglas inside the spare tire cover so the surface of it looks flat and neat.
The only downside is that you have to remove the spare to check the air....
Works good, I did it about 10 years ago. <http://www.theautoist.com/tricks_in_the_trunk.htm>
Some cars came stock with the upside down tire. For the rest, that is heresy I tell ya! :)
i saw JWs tire trick a while back, I actually found my oil drain pan from WalMart fit perfect inside the rim, works great for cleaning items or jumper cables.
