Here are a couple of shots of the method that I used to remove the spigot bushing. The first one shows the 'tool' (a one-off ground 5/16" wing/toggle bolt) pulling the old bushing out of the end of the crankshaft while the engine is still on the stand. (sorry for the out of focus, I didn't use the flash) The second shows how I ground the bolt wings, and the old bushing, the inside of which had a noticable groove worn into it a little less than an inch in from the outside (gearbox) side. This was worn from the end of the input shaft. This old bushing is 1-1/2" long and the one listed for this car and the one that I purchased was 1", I am going to make up an aluminum, press-fit spacer to place in behind the new 1" part that I have.

Another way is to put grease in the hole, find a dowel almost the same size as the hole(tight fit), and hit with a hammer. Hydraulic action forces bushing out

Lloyd, I did consider doing that or using soggy paper towels as someone had mentioned, but decided against both. The first would have been messy to clean up and the second did not appeal to me due to the water factor. (something in my mind did not like bare metal and water) Besides that, the engine was in the stand and I did not wish to chance tipping it over by belting it with a BFH, not to mention the clearance issues. This way worked out to my satisfaction, it only took about 15 minutes to fine tune the shape of the wings and about 5 minutes of finageling to remove the old bush and best of all, no mess.

all the soggy towels and grease won't work as good as old bar soap, use dial or like, the Ivory just breaks apart...too dry

try the soap and you will agree...it works great !!

I couldn't get any of those methods to work on that GT motor of mine. Had to cut the bushing length-wise and then remove it. Must have been in there since '69.

Jim,
As they say, Necessity is the mother of invention! Just another great example that improvisation can make purchasing purpose built tools unnecessary, and that there are many good ways to skin the cat. Folks have developed several good ways to accomplish this task and if one doesn't appeal to you, there can be others (as mentioned above) to choose from!
