was there a particular year in which the factory used the "hangs down" (i.e. you attached the filter from below instead of from on top) spin on filter?
Not the cannister as used real early, but a spin on.
Moss doesn't describe them by year.
And it appears that the filter itself is different.
Oops. Wrong place.
spin on oil filter, hangs down or goes up

I just put a hangin oil filter adapter on my 69GT, it was the only way to fit everything with a crossflow setup. Very nice adapter but VERY hard to find and pricey when you do find one. I don't believe they came stock with any year MG motor.
They appeared on MGA and MAYBE pre-68 B's. The later starter interferes with the hangy down type
the hang down type spin on filter was standard for a short time in early 70's it was also on the Austin/Morris Marina 1.8 litre models
Hi
no problem its just i am from N.Ireland where i had a lot of dealings with these cars the hang down type on MGA's and early MGB's had a paper element to insert in the heavy housing then the hang down type that had a throw away spin on type filter it isa actually a much smaller filter than the top load type so i would say the top load spin on type does a better job but beware as some of the cheap brand filters dont have the anti drain valve in them this is important on initial start up
