Thanks to everyone who has helped me woth sorting out my re-builds and MG maintenance. Without input from you life in "MGdom" (sorry Tony) would be much tougher!

Thanks to all who responed to my latest post i.e. starter connections. The problem was my wire connections on the starter. I did not have all of the ring connection wires on the bottom post (thanks JDW).

Only two things could cause your starter to react exactly like you described and that was the most common one. Good detailed descriptions like you gave are the heart of recognizing the problem.
