Help, I recently replaced the entire ignition key switch that had been bypassed by previous owner. He installed a push button in place of the cigar lighter. Now that I have re-attached the wires that he bypassed - the double white w/ red tracer to the starter relay and the green to fuse position number six. The starter won't disengage. I replaced the relay and that hasn't corrected it.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks

If the starter starts running as soon as you turn the ignition switch on the two small wires on the relay are crossed. If not, stand by for better answers.

I am sitting by "ALSO", with "Baited Ears"
The Ignition switch, on the Little Red Rider(LRR), is in the cigarette-lighter also.

Make it hard to steal the car, when there is a hole in the column and the I-Switch has a Cig-Lighter Handle and Cap over it….

So keep the "Cards&E-Letters" coming, on this anomalous.

would it be possible to supply some more information to our viewing public as to what year the vehicle is, and also the colors of the wires attaching to the starter, etc..?

it's a '77 B
the wires that appear to have been bypassed (which were replaced with a simple spring push button) were the pair of white w/ red tracers to the relay and the green wire going to fuse position number six

I have tried reversing the pair of W/R and the black ground, as suggested by John Weimer, with no luck. As soon as you turn the key to the on position, the starter engages and won't turn off until you pull off the ground wire.

If it reacted that way only after you switched the wires I suggested, they were on right before. One should activate when the switch is turned to the start position and the other goes to the plus side of the coil. When they are installed backward the starter will be activated by the power from the coil when the ignition switch is turned on. Niether one of them is a ground wire.

after tinkering with the wires I got everything to perform. I am a little concerned that the relay seem "hot" even with the key off. That is to say - I was cleaning up - rearranging wire routing, etc. I noticed that the relay clicked even though the key is off.

Is this normal?

Also, somewhere in all this messing around, the temperature gauge quit working. I've check fuses and connections - Any hints?

I appreciate all of the input and help!
