Can't tell for sure, but it sounds like something is grinding to me. WP or Alt bearing, maybe?

Ian, I just replaced the water pump on my 74' Midget and I had a "grinding sound" too but I noticed it as I installed the fan. After taking the fan off and trying a few washers for spacers a few times I discovered that the pully was rubbing on the weep hole area on the bottom of the pump. I filed down the offending area on the pump and wala, no noise. I purchased the pump from VB so I suppose the after market modle had a bit more material than the original. I only had to remove about 1/16" or so.

I also noticed when I removed the old pump that the impeller had beed rubbing the outside if #1 cylinder. The new pump is not contacting the affected area now. Perhaps a thicker gasket or filing down just enough of the impeller face might do the trick for you as well.

Sounds simple and I hope this helps.

I had the exact same issue with a new water pump.

No on the flapper. Mine makes noise also. Was a pain till I found out what it was. Now just turn the radio up. Also may want to remove the belt and run engine and make sure noise not internal. Remember a extremely short time is necessary. Car will overheat. Also noise can be in the clutch system of the fan. I had that problem. Can't remember what it sounded like. But can feel it when spin the fan. It was a rough feeling. Maurice

Ian-- The sound my inexperienced ears hear is that flapper. I had the same sound on my '78. It sounds like a rattle to me.
