MGB: Steering Questions

I have been looking at the mods around the steering column and it looks like the steering column is about 2 to 3 inches shorter. Some one run me through what has to be done to the steering on this Ford 302 swap. You cut out that section back to the fire wall and you fill in with metal and re-cut the hole. Looks like to me when you put the column back in it should stick through a little further than pictured. Is it still in the same place and it just looks funny to me? Help me out on this.
Thanks Will

I bought the williams book and I thought it had a section about putting a 302 in but it does not even mention the Ford 302 and on the review on amazon it showed color pictures.
The book I got had all black and white pictures , only right hand steer details and was only about the aluminum v8 engines, it was no help at all. Did I ever get the shaft , they must have sent me the english swap book. Surely you can't do a swap with this book !

Will, you may have gotten an earlier edition of Roger's book. I don't recall if the one the latest is 2nd edition or 3rd; I think it's 3rd. It has a black cover & red back & spline. It definitely had color pics & does cover the 302. If I recall, he covered Larry Shimp's car fairly extensivily and has quite a few pics of Pete Mantell's too. The way those two put their engines in, neither was required to modify the firewall so he may not cover that even in that edition.

On my car, I did put the motor further back & a little lower. I clipped the corners of the firewall, but I left the steering cone mostly in tact. I haven't updated my journal in a while, but if you scroll about 1/2 way down here http://forum.britishv8.org/read.php?13,6554 you can see what I did.

There are several ways to skin this cat affected by where you're putting the motor & how much you want to rework the firewall area. But, you don't have to change where the cone is. If you're using the stock steering rack you won't wan to change it for obvious reasons. If you're using an after market rack (as with Ted's front end) you have to have a steering shaft made anyway & that's pretty easy. I got one done by Sweet MFG in Kalamazo MI. Once you have your firewall the way you want it, use a piece of wooden dowel as the steering rod to figure out how long you need it. Then call up Sweet & place your order. The MG uses a 3/4" 48 spline end if I recall, but if you're going to replace the steering knuckle, you might want to consider double-D or one of the other more common ends. The MG diameter/spline combination wasn't in stock anywhere around here so I had to order mine.

You can special order just about any combination of UJl from flaming river. They made up my UJ (not listed in there cat) and had it to me inside a week for no extra charge.

Well I guess it is, finish getting all the parts I need and just play it by ear. I have no problem with any kind of fabrication. It sometimes is good to get tips from some one who has been there and done that, but it looks like to me everyone who has put a 302 in their B has done it a little different. I ordered the right book, went back and looked at what I reviewed on Amazon but when I ordered it they sent me something different. It really doesn't look very hard to do. I already have decided to make my motor mounts using some generic biscuit mounts so I can put them anywhere on the frame rail I want. I also will fab the transmission mount and put it where I want. I'm going to get rid of that center brace that is in the way too if I can.

Mounted my engine fairly low. Stock steering was pointed directly at the headers. Ended up with an Ididit gm style column (30" - could've gotten away with a 28"). Fabbed a drop bracket and used a speedway ball mount for the firewall (welded up the stock location, moved things down about 1.75 inches). My rack is tilted up - cut off the original rod - used a double u-joint to get by the block and over the frame rail. The borgeson/flaming river joints are nice and slim.

Tom,
James Browler used a go kart rear axle bearing where the shaft went through the firewall, I thought that was a great idea.
I guess James needed that high speed bearing doing all that high speed racing steering .  Good one for me !

I think if you look carefully at Larry's '68 GT, you'll find that he grafted-in sections from a "rubber-bumper" firewall. He also used a 1977 dashboard. I don't know for certain, but I'd bet he's using a rubber bumper steering rack, u-joint, and steering column.
