Does anyone know if an earlier model steering wheel (preferably the leather-wrapped 3-spoke type) will fit a later model(77) MGB? Is there really a difference in the splined hub, or is it just that the earlier ones had a horn brush & pushbutton. Or maybe someone out there has a nice aftermarket wheel that they're ready to part with for $$. Anybody have any pros or cons on the aftermarket types from the parts suppliers? Thanx

I just went out to the garage to see if I could put the 77 wheel on the 68 steering column.
Althought the slpines look to be the same, there was some sideways play. That could be due to the two ears sticking out of the back of the wheel banging into the turnsignal hump (which is removavle) on the shaft. Note: the shafts have a different design; the early one goes from splines to a slowly increasing cone shape (what is the math term?), while the 77 shaft begins with the splines and goes almost immediately into a rounded shape. The other question would be about the shrouds; I couldn't check that. Hope this helps.

I've been told (by the description I posted here of my wheel) that it is an aftermarket. It seems fine and looks "right" to me, for what little that should be worth.
My B is a chrome 74.
I would love to use one of the old steering-wheels that had 3 sets of 3-4 spokes. Not sure what year they used that old style but my brother's TR3 used to have the same style wheel.

I have a '70 roadster that has the older style steering wheel, with the "wire" spokes. I believe that I have a 68-69 steering column.

I picked up a later model steering wheel (leather wrapped, with flat steel spokes) at a car show. It does not fit my column. The splined shaft on the column is 7/8 inch diameter, while the steering wheel has a 1/2 inch opening.

Apparently the shaft size changed between the '69 and '70 model years, so it would seem that the steering wheels are interchangeable from '62-69 and from '70-80, but can not be interchanged between those groups.
