My headlight flasher/high beam/turn signal indicator switch broke recently. Got a new one at Moss. In trying to get the steering wheel off, found that it was very tightly on the spline. Did NOT see any bolt holes for a puller anywhere on my 1979 B. There is a good chance that the wheel has NEVER been off in 30 years!

Is a special kind of puller required?

I tried to loosen it by putting the nut back on and "banging" it on the nut A LITTLE with an air tool, but this did not seem to loosten it much. Also sprayed some lubricant in there late today and will let it sit overnight.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for looking.

You're on the right track, but make sure you use Blaster as the penetrant and let it set for at least a day or more.

There's a thread on here about this very issue on the late B's. Really should not be a big deal. Pull on the top of the rim while prying from the bottom with your knees as you rap the nut, backed of by about an eith of an inch. Wiggle a little at a time; be patient. It went on; it will come off!

Dan has my method!
Keeps the column from collapsing. Dont be afraid to put some pressure on it at 12 o'clock with one hand and at 4 and 8 with your knees. Keep the nut flush w/column end so you dont damage any threads.

I just replaced the same switch on my 74 and did not have to remove the wheel (although the plastic cowl is kind of fiddly to get reinstalled).

That is because your 74 is different from the 77-80's

Thanks a lot for the helpful tips.

I finally got it off after spraying some lubricant in there and waiting overnight, then pulling it at the 4, 8, and 12 o'clock positions while a friend simultaneously applied "taps" with a flat bit on an air gun to the shaft.

The switch on the '79's, at least, HAS to go over the steering column, because that's what tells the turn signals to cancel.
