1970 B-GT
With the car pointed straight I can probably move the steering wheel a 1/2 an inch to an inch left right before there is any steering input.
The tie rod ends are new and I recently installed a GEM upper bushing repair kit to address shakes when hitting bumps.
Any thoughts? Is there a way to tighten the steering box? (if that's the correct name for where the steering shaft enters the rack)

I had loose push rod ends at the rack. Pulled boots back, tightened the retainers for the ball end of tie rod and slop was gone. This would not help if rack itself was worn.
Check the u-joint coupling as well... May be a combination of things.
Remove the damper cap and take the thinest shim out from under and see if this makes a difference. If it does, check the full range of the steering to make sure that is doesn't tighten up at either end. If it does, then the rack is worn at the mid point and other remedies are in order (such as replacing the steering assembly).
Cheers,
I have the upper bushing repair kit in hand and am going to start repair Sat. Did you remove the steering column to make the repair? Is there any pitfalls I should be aware of? Thanks for any advice R Aly
Think of it as "turbo lag" in the steering. Or late model Toyota "steer by wire" software.<BG>
