What is the simplist way to determine if you car is equipped with overdrive, without crawling under the car?
Can you tell from the VIN #?
Are all MGB's built in 1970 for the US equipped with overdrive?
The car that I have aquired is sitting in my relatives polebarn and i won't be able to see it until the weekend. I was under the inpression that the car does not have overdrive, but the truth is it may not be functioning at all.
When I look at pictures I took of the wiper switch, it does not appear to have any overdrive "markings".

Very few have the sticker for the OD on the column, I can't remember ever seeing one in person. All the early 70s cars had the OD wiper switch installed irregardless of whether the OD was there or not. The only sure way is to get under the car and have a look, sorry.
Wray's right. And given that an MG hasabout 4 inches ground clearance, take a floor jack and a flashlight. Should look like this, key is the object you see at the right (rear axle) end of the trans...
Thank you very much. The picture from Jon answered the question.
About 25 years ago (before I sold the car to my relative) I replaced the clutch. The transmission did NOT have the OD unit attached.
You can also check to see if the yellow wire is connected to the transmission wairing harness. This not fool proof as the od may have been removed.
If you have the engine number you can tell from that. Of course that does not mean that the original transmission is in the car! Here is a link to the engine number codes: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/namgbr/identify.htm Hope it has OD!
a lot of od s in this period, you could put in 3rd gear and flip the lever to the side and release it quickly. if it is spring loaded and bounces back is a good sign it is od. dead and does not spring back 4 speed. also under hood on passenger side follow the wires up from tranny if the yellow wire plugs into harness it is od. no yellow wire no od.
