Anybody have a trick to getting the last one out? Two dropped out, I beat one out, but the last one is just flat in there. I tried the biggest hammer I have, but the frame member is starting to show signs of stress.
All I can think of is to saw it off as close to the frame as I can, then drill it with progressively larger bits until I can work it loose.
I have it soaking in penetrating oil now.
Any ideas?
thanks,
Frank

Frank,
Why are you removing the bolts?
This would probably take an impact wrench and a pair of locking nuts. The only thing that keeps the unit from spinning is the bevel.
First, they are not bolts. They are tapered pins with nuts on each end.
Second, no need to "remove" the front two, just take the top nuts off. and drop the crossmember.
"Ballonfoot" had a description of the process a month or so ago. I suggest you search for it. One of his "public service announcements"
My intent was for painting. Guess I really don't "need" to take it out, just got it in my head that I want it out. The one I can't get out is toward the rear. Maybe I'll just leave well enough alone, huh?
I did read ballonfoot's article, but I didn't recall it addressing the stuck bolts.
thanks guys.
Frank,
I did remove these during my resto. After removal, I had a very difficult keeping the pin from spinning on reassembly. Unless there's a real problem, I wouldn't remove them again.
From the top . PB Blaster , let sit one hour or so.. back top nut off but not all the way to protect the threads and use impact hammer with drift pin attachment. 2 seconds.
I used an old wheel nut,its got a closed head so you can batter it all you like and the threads will be ok.
Thanks guys. I hit it again with penetro, and I'll just beat the crap out of it tomorrow. Or maybe I'll just leave it alone - depends on weather or not I can find my medication.
If the car has had any accident damage the member can bend just enough to lock the pin without any obvious damage.
Unless the cross member needs repair, modification for(?), or replacing, I would leave it alone. There's no need to drop it out during a normal restoration. I would pull the front fenders though, as it's not only easier to work on, but some hidden rust issues will probably pop up. JMHO. PJ
