MGB: The proposed FAIR TAX , your thoughts?

Much of what is written in these threads points fingers, accuses, finds fault. I say we turn that energy into studying a proposal that has the great potential to make our lives and our country significantly better. It's called the FAIR TAX, and it has been discussed very little by the mainstream media. This discuission is not about Bush or Obama; it is about US - The People should come first. Your thoughts, if you please?

FROM WWW.FAIRTAX.ORG Emphasis added in bold, underline...thanks, CWW Aiken, SC

The FairTax:
Enables workers to keep their entire paychecks
Enables retirees to keep their entire pensions
Refunds in advance the tax on purchases of basic necessities
Allows American products to compete fairly
Brings transparency and accountability to tax policy
Ensures Social Security and Medicare funding
Closes all loopholes and brings fairness to taxation
Abolishes the IRS

MORE:
What is the FairTax plan?
The FairTax plan is a comprehensive proposal that replaces all federal income and payroll based taxes with an integrated approach including a progressive national retail sales tax, a prebate to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue neutrality, and, through companion legislation, the repeal of the 16th Amendment.

The FairTax Act (HR 25, S 296) is nonpartisan legislation
. It abolishes all federal personal and corporate income taxes, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes and replaces them with one simple, visible, federal retail sales tax administered primarily by existing state sales tax authorities.

The FairTax taxes us only on what we choose to spend on new goods or services, not on what we earn.
The FairTax is a fair, efficient, transparent, and intelligent solution to the frustration and inequity of our current tax system.

I'm actually for this. It should cut the size of the IRS. If you're an illegal, then you're still paying income taxes. They would help pay for services that they get. People spend what they make so the more you make the more you spend

Great idea, but how do we get our elected offenders to vote it in? They'll never willingly give up their power.

I think Pelosi wants to start a flat tax, or VAT, she just wants to piggyback it on all of the taxes we already pay. They don't intend to get rid of the IRS or our existing tax code monstrosity. Another example of a government entitlement program that will never end.

been for it for a long time...........but until you abolish organized crime unions who prey on real property thru taxes...you will never be safe from illegal property(wealth) confiscation........they aren't stupid, they have the citizenry corraled in a pen and slaughter them as they see fit. This ain't rocket science...it's sharecroppin/slavery. Your "fair Tax" saving will go right into one pocket and out the other thru property(tangibles) taxes...as long as you have an open conduit to a mans wealth, corruption will seek it's own level.

I'd like to be able to keep more of what I earn, and I hate spending hours every year filling out tax forms.

You're right - Congress won't vote for this as it would take power from their grasp.

I love the fair tax but I agree with you guys that it will never come to pass.

I am all for it but I am a realist and understand that it will never happen because they can't make it progressive enough. Even though they have said they will exclude an amount that enures that a large percentage of Americans will not pay they still won't go for it. If they lose the class envy and progression it just will never happen. This about social engineering at it's finest and special interests.

Too bad, good ideas in this...

As I understand the fair tax it is a federal sales tax. Won't work. Look at states that depend on sales tax and how they are dealing with the current economy. What makes you think those in power in Washington will relinquish your dollars and their spending power? And if the IRS is dissolved what agency will be created to collect the tax dollars generated by the fair tax? Of course this is my opinion and I could be wrong.

Yes, the flat tax... championed by bazillionaire Steve Forbes, with a cute new name.

Why would a bazillionaire champion anything that didn't benefit bazillionaires?

Great idea for those in the top tax bracket... not so great if you make less than $300K a year

I really don't see a problem with taxing everything except necessities (food, medicine) at 20 percent for everyone. You spend more, you pay more, you spend less, you pay less. Make the federal government live within their means, just like the rest of us, its about time the fatcats were put on a diet.

Richard, why woould you be for a this Tax. WE are conditioned to the IRS, what would they do? Supervise the fairness of the fair tax? It would be just like Obamacare, DOA and only the large corporations would benefit. Wouldnt we all be better off if we just pay the taxes we now pay plus 20 per cent. Thats probably what Obamacare will cost. Nothing is going to go down, that is the big lie, every one believes the Federal Government will take less, NO THEY WONT.

the system in place favor the rich with large tax breaks. i think the fair tax sounds like what we need. first step to getting it is clean house in the house. put the fear of god and voters in them. maybe the will pay us some mind, after we break there rice bowl.

Chuck, if I recall the book that process of the fair tax taxed a larger segment of the economy even at a lower rate which is how they can lower the rate and still collect more money. They are taxing the first dollar the same as the last dollar. They dealt with the regression part of the tax and made it somewhat fair. They will never get rid of the IRS but it could be reduced. But it does not punish productivity, so it will never pass the Democrat muster and it does not help special interests.

Hi Chuck - I don't understand one statement you made - "Wouldnt we all be better off if we just pay the taxes we now pay plus 20 per cent...."

That would put some at nearly 60% taxes. Not a great scenario. I believe the across the board fair tax is a fraction of that for everyone.

Should it matter if one person earns more than another? A doctor that sacrificed and went to school for an extra 7 years should get a reasonable return on that investment. Higher risk should mean higher pay, lower risk, lower pay. "Who" should decide that return? We have a choice: the free market (all of us), or Big Government. Who do you trust?

If we pay everyone the same regardless of the sacrifice, investment, and risk, pretty soon everyone will just start chilling out and taking the easiest path. Betcha we'll have fewer Docs spening $200k for medical school knowing they're only going to get paid a $50k salary, same as the electrician, MG mechanic, etc.

thanks, Chuck W.

I get worked up sometimes...I was alluding to the possibility that Washingtons Idea of fair may be different that ours. They simply wont pass a fair tax, they will listen to those Lobbyists sent to them by corporations and interest groups. We will be screwed because what will happen is they will pass a fair tax say of 20 percent and put that on top of what we pay now.

Anyone thinking taxing will go down is drinking lots of coolaide. It will only go up like Obama care will not lower medical costs nor will it stop inflation or rising costs. That bill is riddled with special interest issues just like a flat or fair tax will be.

Taxes never go down unless there is a corresponding rise in taxes someplace else. At the rate they spending money these days, taxes will never recede.

Wyatt, there is no question we are going to get some significant tax increases. A VAT tax is pretty regressive and I am not sure how the Democrats are going to solve that problem.

Chuck....it will just increase the only real free market in the country...the underground economy......which is growing everyday, particularly among the poor.
