My fuel pump has not been working right. I decided to pull the pump apart one more time before I went to the store to buy the Purolator generic pump. When I pulled the pump open this is what I found:

This was in a pump that was supposed to be NOS. I would say it could have broken itself apart while pumping, but there were traces of superglue on the broken part. Pretty crummy. This would explain why the car ran for a little while and then wouldn't start again. I swapped the part from the old pump I had and will try it out and see what happens. Any pointers on assembling the electric side of the pump? Wish me luck.

Just by chance was this one from the guy on eBay selling a bunch of NOS pumps? I considered buying one from him but won't if this is his product. Thanks.

Steve,

Yes it was the guy with a bunch of NOS pumps. I wouldn't recomend him for pumps. There are several on this forum that can say, "I told you so".

So how do these points work? I reassembled the pump and hooked it back up and, nothing. I pulled the pump back out, pulled the top plastic cover off, checked all the wiring and it all looked good, so I ran a wire from the battery to the pump. The plunger went up and stayed. I messed around with the rocker and was able to get it to vibrate/cycle. But only when my finger was on it, holding the end of the rocker down a bit. I tried to bend the little finger to increase the gap (same thing I was doing by holding it down with my finger) but I couldn't get it to continuously cycle.

Are these things really that sensative to adjustment? If I run the pump dry will it damage it? Any good websites that show how to adjust the points?

Here is how I have it adjusted:

And this is what the wiring looks like:

Thanks

HA!!!

I think I got it. After thinking about it, I realized that this was a poorly remanufactured pump. I figured that they had not put the diaphragm in right either. I seperated the halfs of the pump and loosened the diaphragm several turns and tested the function of the points by pressing the rod into the housing. It became very apperant what the "throw over" was that they talk about in the Bently manual. I had to loosen the diaphragm about 3 turns to get to this point. I buttoned everything back up and hooked it to power. Sure enough, that thing runs!

I fought the SU and I won.

Thanks,

Good Job, don't you feel good now. It's funny how this old english stuff will work great for years if you can just find the secret touch. The magic behind it's operation.

Good Job!

Yeah, the operation of the pump doesn't come across well in print, but once you fool around with it a bit, you quickly learn how to get the stupid thing working properly again.

Good job!

Update:

I sent an email to the person I bought the pump from saying I did not think the pump was NOS and I was not a happy customer.

He sent an email saying he was sorry about the problem, the pump was in a lot sold to him as NOS and he is sending me another pump at no charge. I was really happy that he acknowledged my situation and offered to resolve it. I was expecting him to send an email saying it was sold "as is" tough break. I will let you all know how it ens up when I get the new pump.
