When setting the timing on a 76 Midget ,is the vacume advance line connected or disconnected to the dist ?
I set the timing at 2deg ATDC with the advance line connected.
Also the tach is reading about 1/2 the actual RPM.
A Crane ingnition system was installed...could that be problem?

Thanks everyone

I don't know why the tach is reading half. Have you a dwell/tach meter to cross check your installed tach. The problem could be in the dash tach or a botched install of the Crane.
What else has been done to the engine besides the Crane installation? Carb change?
Disconnect the vacuum to set the timing.

Thanks for the replies Gentlemen .

The Crane system was installed by the owner prior to me working on it.
I had a dwell/tach connected to set the idle after I set the timing and it was reading 2x the RPM's that the dash tach read.
This is turning into a fun project after re-ringing the motor and I have it running great.
The owner just bought a real nice rust free 76 for the body so now I'am in the process of pulling the motor and trans out to replace into the new body.
It's been awhile since I've worked on something British.
There is nothing left to do on my Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce and being retired I have lots of time on my hands.

The tach reading is an issue that Crane deals with in their installation instructions. Go the their website, as they have all the XR-700 and XR-3000 installation manuals available in downloadable form. Its easily repairable, but takes a bit of patience.
