MGB: To canon or not to canon...

Looking for opinions..... A canon costs around 180ish, and a peco costs around 380 or so....

Is the Peco that much better? I've heard that fitting the Peco is a tricky. The canon I have fits awfully close to the oil pan. Does the Peco too?

All .25$ is worth it.

Thanks

P.S. What sources are there for each? Are there other brands to consider?

other than a camera or an artillary piece I don't know which canon you refer. Pico makes exhaust parts I think but is it a header, system of another component. Sorry i can't be of futher assistance.

The cannon flows worse than a stock cast iron manifold. If your goal is weight reduction, it probably is the lightest header, so it has one thing going for it. The LCB headers are the way to go for better power.

The Peco is Awesome!
Well worth the money. You can actually FEEL the added power. I had what I thought was a "freeflow" exhaust on my car. (This was many, many years ago)

When I put the Peco on the car, I was amazed at the power increase. Plus, I already had a header on it too.

I used to get a kick out of romping on the gas pedal whenever someone would walk by the exhaust in the back. The pressure was so great coming out, that itd scare the "you know what" out of them.

I still get a kick out of that!

If you want to add some performance to your MGB, the money for the PECO is Well spent.

Now, I don't know this for sure, but, it looks like a SCREAMING DEAL at SC Parts in the UK. They have the Header listed on their website at 99.94 GBP which works out to $163. USD, and the exhaust for 104.33GBP which works out to $171.10 USD.

That totals $334.10. Which is an AWESOME DEAL. I don;t know what shipping is, but, even if it was $100, and I doubt that, it would still be a great deal.

Check it out.

BritTek offers it at $525 USD.

I think its the best $500 you can spend on the car. It tucks up nice and neat, and if you get both the header and the exhaust together, you'll have no fitment issues, it'll be fine. Its a big bore system, and I highly suggest painting it with either POR20 Heat Resistant, Aluminized paint. This not only looks awesome, but will protect forever, the system from rust. You could also get it JetHot or other brand of ceramic coating, which is really cool too. For the price, I went with the POR20, we'll see how long that lasts.

BritTek advertises a 15% power increase, and I would probably agree with that. Let me put it this way. You can feel it with the butt detector, and the butt detector, especially mine, is not very accurate, so it takes at least 5-6 hp to get that butt needle moving.

Good Luck,

B

LBC stands for Little British Car but Jeff wrote LCB and that stands for Long Center Branch which means a header with a long center pipe.

I do love my Peco, and run them on two cars. But... me thinks Brian is a wee bit optimistic about the power gains. According to Peter Burgess, a complete Peco exhaust system will add 2-3 HP to the car. You can't measure that on a butt dyno. If it were placed on a supercharged engine then I could see perhaps a greater gain where you might actually feel it, assuming the head would allow the extra flow. Anything is possible I suppose, or maybe my butt dyno is out of calibration since it didn't measure anything on either of my cars! ;)

Regardless, I agree that a Peco system is better than the Canon absed on what I've learned about them.

COMPETITION PREPARATIONFOR THE MGB

HUFFAKER ENGINEERING CO.
competition preperation XIV. The Exhaust System
For a competition exhaust system, the factory competition header
part no. AHH 7103 is proven to be an cxcellent all-round system. Many
hours of dyno devclopment have gone into various styles and configurations,
some of which wcrc better and some of which were worse, but all
of the types which resultcd in incrcascd horse power at one particular
rpm lost more than the gain at some othcr given rpm. Therefore, I suggest
the factory header as a standard to work with. This cxhaust header should
be complemented by the use of 1 7/8" OD exhaust pipe running to the
back of the car and ternminating in a megaphone. Thc length of this system
including the megaphone should be measured at the junction point of the
two down pipes on the header, and should bc 8 ft. 3 ins. long; exactly.
I am sure you will notc that there are many othcr configurations of the
exhaust system running on MGB's throughout the country, but this
particular-set-up has proven best in all cases for us.
