MGB: Torque Header ft/lbs. Question

The PECO is on - front to back!

I found the torque setting for a regular manifold in the library. Is the setting the same for a header? Everything I read infers it should be tighter than 15ft./lbs. called for with the OEM manifold.

Thanks!

Dave

Are you using a stock manifld gasket or the thicker gray looking one with no steel backing?

Just get it nice and snug, but don't strip it.

I've never used a torque wrench on those anyway, too hard to get in there. I use an open end wrench.

You'll LOVE THE PECO.

I'll still never forget when I first got mine and my then girlfriend walked behind the car and rapped the throttle. She jumped so high. LOTS of exhaust comes out that sucker! SOUNDS GREAT TOO!

I go "NICE AND TIGHT" on the elbow grease meter!

15 ft lbs is not a setting you can use on a 1/2" drive wrench and probably not on a 3/8 drive either. if you have a 1/4 drive torque wrench, have at it.

but you can tighten with an open end wrench just as well. 15 ft-lbs is tugging pretty good on a 6" wrench.

Like Brian I've never used a torque wrench on manifolds and that type gasket requires more attention in order to seal good and hold together later.

Tighten it up by feel like Brian said, then every time you drive the car retighten it with the engine cold or warm but not hot until that time they feel tight when you try to turn them.

The reason for this proceedure is that type gasket will keep compressing for a while and if you don't work all the compression out of it the manifolds will loosen and the gasket will blow out. It's a very good gasket, the best kind with headers, but does require some attention until it takes a set.

Thanks John - will do. Glad to hear I got the right one! I will keep a wrench handy.
