I'm quite proud of myself tonight...I completed the resto/cleanup of the trunk on my 72'. I started with a wire cup brush and took what was left of the paint and all of the rust down to bare clean/metal, then primed, sanded, primed, sanded, and finally painted. I picked up 2 rolls of beige trunk carpet at O'Reillys carpet for $10 each, 2 cans of 3M spray glue for $11, and 2 packs of razor blades for $1. 2 nights and several raw fingers later....done. I'm almost tempted to try making my own door panels next....anybody got a sewing machine they want to get rid of?

And one more...It really is so satisfying to complete project that you haven't tried before!
That is better looking than the kits I've seen. Make sure you have a good seal on that trunk or the first car wash or rain and your carpet will be soaked. I had a poor seal and wound up with an inch of water in the trunk after a car wash. I got a new seal from McGreggor in Canada and no leaks.

Good job. I have been working on my trunk for the last several days...just finished it up tonight.
Did the same prep you did, used rust encapsulator and painted it. Then put on a layer of Dynamat and sprayed that with textured trunk paint by Duplicolor. My plan is to get a carpet set eventually but I wanted to attack the rust for now.
Looks great... Hope you trunk is sealed very well... Would have left the bottom unglued...
The pile on the carpet can't be too thick because you can see the details of the trunk. It looks great! Where is your fuel pump or had you not replaced it ?
Nice job !
Patrick
Fuel pump was not in the trunk until rubber bumper models..
The fuel pump is in the engine compartment with an aux under the car. I originally planned on making a plywood bottom and attaching the carpet to that so that I could lift it to access all of the bolts for the gas tank, but I ended up cutting a small X in the carpet over each bolt head (it is not glued over each bolt) so that I can still access them, because I do hope to put a new tank in within the next year, and it doesn't show that way. This was my first attempt at carpet, and it wasn't overly difficult. Basically I just measured each area to be carpeted and cut the material, adding a few extra inches all the way around. Next I dry fitted to get it a little closer, then glued and worked it into all of the grooves/corners with my fingers. After letting it sit for about 1/2 hour, I trimmed off the excess with a razor blade (these don't last long cutting carpet and you do need fresh sharp ones about every 2 feet of cut). Getting it to form fit wasn't as difficult as I expected. I did learn that it is key to get enough glue on the edges and around any of the ridges, but not to put too much, as it will just come undone.
The carpet I used came in a 3x6 roll and was available in black, medium blue, charcoal, or beige. My local store only had one roll of the beige in stock, so you may need to plan ahead. Here is a link to O'Reillys listing. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/search/Rolled+Carpet/N0347/C0123.oap?keyword=carpet
As far as the water goes, I did use a tube of body sealer to seal the holes/joints in the trunk before carpeting ($8 I think), and I plan on putting new weather stripping all the way around. I don't drive my B in the rain (it’s not my daily driver) if it is at all avoidable, and the only car wash it gets is a hand wash at home. Thanks for all of the compliments and thanks to all of the "gurus" on here that have offered advice. It is your many bold projects and grand undertakings that inspire me to take a chance and try something that I haven't done before!
Thanks for the clarification. I owned a 75 B when I was in high school. The pump failed on me so many times, I never forgot where it went. In fact, I still wake up at night screaming "Not the pump again, Not the pump again" every few months! My parents had the pre-74-1/2's. I don't recall the pump being a problem.
Thanks for the clarification. The carpet looks great !
Great job Travis. what 3M spray product did you use as glue?
The 3M glue was number 77 if I remember correctly..got it at Lowe's.
Paul, I'm lovin' the Midget! Are you doing some SCCA racing with it or is it just for fun? I'll actually be in Eunice visiting the family next week in the B..one of these days we'll have to meet up so that I can drool over your car collection!
That's a great job and very rewarding that it can be completed in a relatively short time.
Hope to do the same some day. But many more pressing things to complete first...like getting mine back off stands!!
Nice work Travis... too bad you have to cover it up with the spare.
Nice looking trunk fitment!
I cut boards to fit in mine. I glued the carpet to the boards. The last photo does not show but the wheel arches were painted in trunk Spackle color. The back wall is held in with magnets. Nice for mounting jacks and the side pieces protect the fenders.
