hi MGBers, I am new here and have a 1965 mgb roadster that belonged to my mother-in-law til she died. She had wrecked it and so my wife and I now have it. My question is; What do we do to run it on unleaded gas or is there an additive we should use. It has bgeen sitting for about 20 years. It doesn't run at this point but we plan on draining and cleanint the tank to start with. A friend is going to do the body work for us.
Thanks for any info.
Mark

secondly, take a look at the articles in the library (see the tab on the right of the screen). you will find just about any information you need there. if not, just ask...
good luck and be sure to post some pics of this new toy of yours (and the wife's)
I have a '69 and use unleaded with a lead additive. I tried to clean my tank and had to replace fuel filters weekly. I finally, bought a brand new tank for 150 (Moss) and never have had to worry about the crud in an old tank. I ended up with some carb problems due to the old tank even after I changed tanks. That was due to residual rust from they old tank. It purrs at 70 mph now.
There are a number of problems with ULP - un leaded petrol - not the least of which is the lower octane rating. make sure you us a fuel with a high enough rating.
More importantly in the long run is the tendency of the valve seats to erode. The best solution is to have hardened valve inserts fitted; if you are going to have the engine looked at professionally, this might be a good option.
There are a a number of additives you can buy that will solve the problem - carry a little bottle, pop some in the tank when you ill up. They are readily available ate speed shops.
In my 68 MGB (owned it for 43+ years), with the original head and pistons, I put in premium unleaded gas, add an octane booster and lead additive. Every now and then, I put in some Mravel Mystery Oil as an upper cylinder lubricant, just like in the old days.

Don't forget to add Stab-bil to every tank. Keeps the moisture at bay
You should be able to get it started just fine on unleaded, if it's going to start at all.
For now this will help ypu more than anything:

I run my '79 on regular, no additives. It runs a little better on 89 octane. If the price difference is less than 10% I buy the 89 because the economy difference is 10%.
Do not even try to run the 20 year old gas.
Dump it, check the tank and work with fresh stuff.
If the heads were ever redone you likely have hardened valve seats and are fine with quality gas from the pump. additives add nothing but a hole to your wallet. STABIL in every tank is a waste of money if all you are after is moisture control, that is a factor of humidity, and fuel level. If you park it with a full tank there is very little air in there to condense moisture from.
Thank so much guys, wow there is a lot of info in here. Thanks for all the suggestions.
