All, One of the best amateur drivers I've ever known is a man named Frank Zucchi. If you live in California, you probably know his family as the best kind of people, the best restorers around, the hardest racers at the track and the most generous people on the planet. About a month ago Frank was doing a hill climb with the Ferrari Club in his ex-Ferrari Challenge car when a wheel broke going uphill, in a bend at over 100mph. There was a 2-300 foot drop on one side and a 20-30 foot ravine on the other. Frank ended up in the ravine. He crawled out of a burning car with a broken back. The car was a total loss. Frank is coping. The only point is that rally driving and hill climbs are a heluva lot more dangerous that racing on a closed road course. Roll cages and HANS devices help you in a typical car-into-wall or car-into-car collision at amateur racing speeds (but nothing's certain) but none of the safety equipment is designed to turn our racecars into helicopters. Have fun but be safe. You never know when something as odd as a wheel breaking is going to threaten your life. Basil
Was this is Aussie land?
If it was, move over, I'm movin there!
Can I bring my left hand drive 'B'?
Unfortunatly in the Adelaide Classic rally last week there was a fatal crash.
It is a timely reminder to all that it is a dangerous sport.
A couple of years ago my brothers navigator was killed in the Round Australia Rally so I know first hand what it is all about, they went over a cliff.
Has navigator was killed and my brother lost the very top of his thumb. So I do think fate has a huge part to play.
My thoughts go out to the family and friends of the pair.
