First off, let me introduce myself, I'm Scott Lear with Grassroots Motorsports and Classic Motorsports Magazines. One of my many duties here is to hang out on web boards and let people know when we've got stuff they might care about coming up in the magazine. (to think, you've got to hide your time on this web board from your boss, but Tim gives me grief if I fail to spend time online!) You guys are lucky before your cars fall under both umbrellas right now, so we've got MG stuff in Classic and Grassroots.

For Febuary, we've got a story about an MGB with a Volvo B23E (the higher-output euro-spec motor) swapped between the front wheels, with a remarkable number of miles on the clock. Not necessiarly a path the purists would take, but it's a pretty cool car. For those unfamiliar with us, you can check out http://www.grassrootsmotorsports.com, and you can sign up for a free sample. If you sign up soon enough, that free sample will be the Feb. issue, with the MGB/Volvo story in it, or you can look for it at newsstands. This isn't spam, ask anyone who knows us and they'll tell you we're all car guys, the web is just another place we hang out and talk cars. You'll see me around from time to time, and never hesitate to shoot me an email at GRMScottL@aol.com if there's a club event or activity taking place that we can help you out with (one of my other hats is giving goodies out to clubs.)

Thanks, hope you guys enjoy the MGV article!

-Scott

Interesting!! I don't know anything about that engine!! I did have a '67 I believe it was a 120 or 144 or something like that!! This would have been around 1974 or something like that!! (I still temember the day it died) It was a great car and had twin SU's, 1800 cc's I believe!!!!!! OH!!! I saw a block for that Volvo 1800 when I picked up my block from the machine shop this summer!! In a quick look, I mistook it for an MGB block!! grinning smiley
Do you have a photo of that engine that you could post??? Now I am curious!! My mother was born in Sweden and I have visited there twice!! Anyway, I will at least try and find that copy!!!!

A 122. Mine was a '70 144S and I still wish I had kept the drive train and brakes, and trashed the rest when we were done with it.

Yup. I had 444s, 544s, 122s and a 142. Talked Mom and Dad into a 164E and it got worse mileage than their 62 Merc Monterey. Never give advice to family.
The Volvo engines could be made to go.
I'm curious what the weights are between the two.

Gary, I can see where you'd get confused... at first glance it sure looks like Volvo had been eyeing the B block. I think it'll be interesting. I've always wondered, given the similariities in the engines, how tough it would be to put one in a B. Plus you can get a LOT of power out of a Volvo engine, even before going to a turbo (which is as close as your nearest junkyard). If somebody wanted to, they could easily build one up with more power than your V8, Tony.

Why do we all seem to have had the same cars over the years...?

I had a '63 544, first year of the 12volt system, B2000 engine..
Threw on a set of Firestone Town & Country snow tires on it, that car would go anywhere in the snow.

I always did like the look of the 122S also.... several friends had them.

This car is on the short list of cars that should never have left my possession... not cryin'.. just stating facts, I was young and stupid....winking smiley

The 2nd car down was the '66 Barracuda.... 8)

Because we are men of discriminating taste! The 63 544 would also have had the 122 style radiator. The later ones had disc brakes also.
