I have borrowed one from a friend (he has not used it yet). I understand how to calibrate it, but I don't understand how it actually sets the rocker to the right clearence. Does it assume all of the rockers are worn the same amount? Does anyone have a pro or con? My rockers are pretty noisy, and I would like to set the valves before the St Louis trip.

A good write up on it....offers counterpoint and link to point.

I read Barney's write up. I respect his opinions and advice. Barney and his web site are somewhat of a legand in MGA circles. Keep in mind he is the same guy that changed his crank shaft in a motel parking lot! I guess I am seeking second opinions from the B gurus on this board.
I haven't used one for years but from what I remember - you put the device on the rocker nut and loosen the nut about 1/4 turn. Then use the knob on top to turn the screw until it contacts the valve (I can't remember if it begins to slip at that point). Then you back off the knob the appropriate number of "clicks". Then while holding the knob stationary, re-tighten the nut.
I had one in England - it worked very well, was quick and easy to use. I don't think you need to worry about different wear on the valves as long as they all have the same pitch screw thread (which they do)!
I'm certainly no guru, but have used the Click-Adjust successfully to adjust the valves on my B. It doesn't assume that the rockers are worn the same amount. As I understand it, when you use a feeler gauge it does not allow for the slight 'dishing' on top of the valve - the Click-Adjust does. I just carefully followed the instructions that came with the tool and it seemed to work OK.
I'm sure others more knowledgeable than me will comment if I have it wrong - I hope this helps.
I just read the MGA guy's write-up on the Click-Adjust. While he makes some valid points, much of the rant seems mis-conceived. His comment about a .001 error being a big deal is rubbish - if he can adjust his rockers accurately using a feeler gage and get them all within a .001 tolerance he is performing miracles - I don't think most of us could "feel" a .001 difference in the gage fit, nevermind noticing the difference in engine performance or noise. I must say I also resent his implication that using the "tappet" nomenclature is wrong. The Brits have always referred to this technique as "adjusting the tappets". Perhaps we could list all the things he uses the "wrong" word for - I'll start with "cotter pin" - the thing Americans call a cotter pin is actually, and correctly, a "split pin". A cotter pin is a tapered pin with a nut on one end - they used to be used on bicycle cranks!
Marshall steps down from his soap-box!
David,
Take a look here for ClikAdjust info and setting data:
