I am reconditioning some old seatbelt hardware and used evaporust to remove the thick corrosion on some of the parts. I also threw various nuts and bolts in there. The evapo-rust did a GREAT job removing the corrosion. The question is "Now, what do I do with the clean hardware?"
Will the nuts and bolts just rust again unless I primer them? I plan or primer and topcoating the seatbelt hardware, but I figure that over the long run the paint will wear off at any contact points. I'm not interested in spending the money on rechroming the parts since this is for my daily driver, not my garage queen.
Thanks to those that have experience using evapo-rust. This was my first venture with the product, and I'm impressed with how well it worked.

any iron-based metal will rust if left exposed, even many stainless steels. You can prime and paint or clear cost or smear oil all over them.
I prefer to either clear coat them or paint them with silver aluminum paint.
As far as covering metal where the chrome has been worn/scratched/rusted off you have the above options, rechroming, or replacing the parts.
You can also try to do some home, electro-plating but I am not one to tell you how that is done.
Two suggestions:
1. Not sure if this will work, but you could try soaking them in a rust converter solution. I would wash them first to avoid any unexpected chemical reactions. The converter puts an iron phosphate, IIRC coating that inhibits further rust.
2. Powder coat them. My guy is very reasonable as long as you wait for him to do a bigger job in the color you want. I've had small parts like this coated for $10, if he is running a big job in that color. Shop around. The first guy I found to powder coat the brackets for my hood struts had a minimum charge of $100, but felt guilty charging me that, for 2 small brackets and 4 screws, so he charged me $25. Worth it to me at the time, as my GT is white and they look good. Then I found the other guy and I think he charge me $5 for same brackets for the hatch struts since I waited until he ran a bigger job in white. It takes time to set up and clean the equipment. So, waiting pays.
This is a bit pricey but if you use it on other things do work out or split it up among a couple guys it becomes much more affordable. Goes a long way I posted this a while back under seat rails.
This is a product that was introduced to me by Bob Smith coach works in Gainesville Texas. He restores Ferrari's, Mercedes and he had an old Bugatti that he was restoring to show at Pebble Beach for a customer. Someone had painted the springs and originally they should have been unfinished. We asked him what he was going to do in order for them to remain in good condition, he then told us about dri touch. This is a product that was developed originally for the oilfields to prevent rust. He stated that he has had parts that he had dipped and laid outside deliberately for about three years and no rust has appeared.
