I got a new valve cover gasket that I want to put in. Do I simply unscrew the two bolts on top of the valve cover and lift it off? Is it that simple? THANKS

Yep...kinda Murphy proof."
Glad you said "kinda" - nothing is completely Murphy proof! :D
Yep.
If you design something to be foolproof, they'll just design a better fool.
Dont overtighten when reinstalling..Easy to damage the cover..
Replace the rubber grommets under the 2 hold down nuts. These have a tendency of deteriorating over time and compressing. When you tighten down the valve cover it will leak with the old ones in place. RAY
Yes, to the RTV. Watch out for stuff falling in -- not good. I second the rubber grommets, too -- mine were a mess.
Thanks guys. Where are the rubber grommets? underneath the valve cover?
I always seal the gasket to the valve cover....apply a bit of sealer, place the valve cover and gasket on the workbench, lay something on top of it to weight it down a bit, and let the sealer dry. When installing it on the car, wipe a thin smear of grease on the engine side of the gasket.
Doing it this way accomplishes two things. The gasket stays in place when installing the cover, and you can remove the cover to adjust the valve many times without having to replace the gasket.
If you have an aftermarket alloy cover, it's almost imperative to do it this way since there's no lip to hole the gasket in place and it'll try to move as you tighten down the cover.
You'll see the grommets when you remove the bolts....the bolts go through them (under the cap washers).
Thanks for the advice. I'm glad I asked you guys. My valve cover didn't have any grommets... that explains some of the oil buildup under the hood. I just ordered a pair of grommets.
Does anyone have a picture of one of these gromets? Is it something that can be replaced with a rubber washer from the local parts store?
