The 73 B has developed a rattle/ vibration noise behind the driver. It is pitched at D, heavier than a tinny rattle. I can't find it. Checked the aluminum cowl surround, seatbelt, top bar, top frame, trunk lid hinges, removed the jute bag with tonneau sticks in it, jute bag with jack in it, no improvement. What is it?

These sorts of noises are a real misery. I have one in my dash. I've tie-wrapped, relocated and nothing makes the slightest difference. Of course mine only rattles at about 50 MPH - so I can't find it in the driveway.

What about your seat belt retractor mechanism? Could it be inside there?

Exhaust system mountings or rubbing?

Chris, mine is in the key of F. We might have the beginnings of a new British Rock Band.

Down low like a diff issue?

How about under the battery hatch? Maybe it's the hatch cover itself. Possibly one of the mounting screws is loose. (My memory is going. What is the proper term for those screw fasteners used on the hatch?)

I will check the Dzus fitting that holds the battery cover on. There has been an exhaust mount issue, but I think that is solved and is separate. The seatbelts are a non-stock type and have been checked. We'll see!

Foam on the underside of the battery cover deteriorating??

I've been up in the mountains all day, sliding sideways in the snow and getting wood. Checking the batt cover got displaced by Jane's lack of starting ability in her Toyota (corroded batt cable) and the wood.
(Guess how much fun it is to come downhill, do a right turn, and find a 1.5 lane bridge ahead of you as you go sideways in 4 wheel drive!? Woo Hoo! It worked!).
I will check the fittings and the condition of the new rubber seal.

Exhaust and battery cover would be my first guesses as well. I did have a buzz once from the trunk lid of a B. Pressing down on the driver's side would make it stop. A hinge adjustment (closer to the seal) cured it if memory serves. There are sooo many things that can rattle on an old car! :)
