Hi folks - new MBG owner tying to figure out what I just bought <grin>.

Where vinyl seats an orginal option from the factory or am I dealing with aftermarket seats? They are black with red piping which match the snowberry color scheme according to the books I have.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I believe leather ran through '69. In 1970 vinyl was introduced.

Leather did run thru 1969. They are probably aftermarket. Doesn't mean they are bad, just not OE. An awful lot of folks have reupholstered their pre-1970 MGBs in vinyl and been happy with them.

1969 seats are unique to that year. They would have been leather covered and have "crosswise" pleats (i.e. left-to-right, not up & down/fore & aft), flat trapezoidal headrests, and I think all black (black with black piping). If yours are different, they're either different seats or the original seats recovered. As Bob says, nothing necessarily wrong with that unless you're a stickler for originality. Personally, I like the '69s because they are unique -- different seats, side reflectors, etc, and I like the period look of the banjo wheel and the padded dash. Here's a shot of the 1969 GT seats (it's scanned from an MGC GT sales brochure, but the seats were the same in the B GT).

HTH!

(EDIT: In case you can't read the copy and want to know what it says: "Optional center console with electric clock provides space for gloves, maps, and sunglasses. Optional woodrim steering wheel and hardwood gearshift knob add a touch of luxury. Solid-state AM or AM/FM radios are available.")
