They seem inexpensive enough, but I really want to integrate it into the dash of my 77. Oddly enough, there's an almost appropriate looking space on the far right side, right of the glove box. Has anyone drilled through the dash front? ... and, am I apt to screw up the vinyl? I'm sqeamish about causing a tear. Is there any substantial obstruction behind there? I saw a Sunpro with a black face dial for 15 bucks at autozone, which doesn't look bad!

I wouldn't do it through there. You've got to go through the vinyl, the foam, and the steel backing plate, all without messing anything up, and then it'll still be out of your line of sight.
When I had my 77, I put a guage where the cigarette lighter goes. Used a Smiths bezel on it. Looked completely stock, fit in with the heater controls, it's like it was made to go there. Easy to cut the console, too. That's what I'd do. Cigarette smoking is a bad idea in a B convertible, anyway (and I'm a smoker!)
If you do need that for a cell phone, radar detector or whatever, you could do like I did there... cut off the cigar lighter adapter off the cord and wire it directly to a 12V supply and ground.
