Flange that bolts to generator was welded by PO, now shows signs of cracking at the weld. Could this be due to worn engine mounts? Front end twitches to the left under engine braking.

Probably just a poor weld. Get a new water pump. They aren't that expensive.

The "twitching" could be loose rear spring U-bolts, or worse, a broken leaf.

Pump looks fairly new otherwise. Is this a common problem?

I don't think it is that common. Perhaps he had the belt to tight, maybe he let it idle too roughly.

The engine mounts are easy enough to check. They are near the front of the block. The rear only mounts at the tranny.

how much do you want to be the previous owner installed the alternator with the spacer on the wrong side, or not at all, and broke off that tab when tightening it?

Norm- I think you got something there. As soon as I can work out lifting, I'll check the mounts. I'm guessing the rubber is pretty old. Last resto was mid-90s.

Check out your front and rear suspension too. Snap closed throttle shouldn't upset your drive like you describe.
