MGB: Water pump gone? And....

So on the 80 B I have water coming out of the water pump pully so I'm I guessing right that it needs to be replaced? This looks easy so I'm probably in for a world of hurt. I also seem to have a electrical issue now. I went on a long in city drive on Saturday (lots of stop & go) and my temp gage was about at 3/4 of the way up, it normally is around half. Well next thing I know my tach, fuel, temp gages turn signals and tail lights all stop working. After it cooled down I went to have a look around and they all are working again. Same today on my way home from work(with add water pump issue) Is it just getting to hot or??? Thanks, David

Yes you need to replace yuor water pump, no help here on the electricals but heat wouldn't normally affect the gauges. Coinkadink.

All those electrical items are powered off the third fuse down, try cleaning the connections at the fuse first.

Then, I would quit driving the car until you have replaced the waterpump, the water that is leaking out of it is washing all the lubricant out of the sealed bearing. It will fail sooner rather than later, and probably at a very inconvenient place.

Ask me how I know. :)

X2 sure sounds like something is drying out and then works for awhile

Water pump replacement is easy, even I was able to do that one Saturday!!! Got mine from Gordon at the B-Hive. He has the best deal.

Water pump is generally one of the more straight forward items. Just pay attention to which bolt came out from where because they are not all the same length. Other than that there's not much that can trip you up. Still always a good idea to take some pics with a digital camera before you start and during removal.

I did use some gasket sealer when doing mine on both side of the gasket (to pump and to block).

Fix that first and see how it goes.

On the electrical, as noted third fuse from top. If it gets intermitent I would suggest replacing the fuse-block. Its not that expensive and can cure a host of problems.

So he delivered one to you for less than $71.45.

Yes, by a few pennies.

But remember I got my interior panels, seat diaphrams, and seat foams from you Chris :).

As suggested earlier use some sealer on both sides of the gasket.
I use the Permatex no. 2 in a bottle with the brush/cap and have never had a leak on any repairs,If You ever nedd to take it apart again the no. 2 just lets loose without doing a lot of physical work and usually does`nt destroy the gaskets.

Has anyone entertained the idea of an elecrtric water pump?
The pump speed can be remotely controlled and could possibly eleviate excessive heating in stop and go heavy traffic in 90* weather.
I think the idea is to increase the pump speed, then coolant flow increases and the engine would cool down,.......... maybe??
On the flip side, when the engine is cold, reducing coolant flow would aid warn up.
Any thoughts?
