This has been a very weird year for me personally, so I have not been able to drive my car but twice this entire summer. However, today here in Atlanta, it was about as perfect as it can get with clear blue skies and about 74 degrees F.
I threw the top down and hopped into my car and went on a 150 mile adventure in the country. My car ran perfectly and it was wonderful day. To top it off, I pulled up to a traffic light and a new, bright red convertible Mini pulled up beside me, with a mother and several preteen kids - mainly girls. All the kids in the Mini started yelling at me how much they loved my car and then started telling their mother she should have bought a car like mine!!
Now two quick questions:
1) Do you wear a hat when you drive and if so what type? How do you keep it from blowing off?
2) How tall are you?
The reason I ask these questions is that I am about 6"2" tall and when I drive my car my head sticks up above the windshield. When I wear a baseball type hat it keeps trying to fly off of my head and I have lost several hats this way. I know I could turn it around but it looks so stupid that way. Also, being tall, I find that my knees start cramping after about 100 miles of driving.
Does anyone else have these problems and or solutions?????
Thanks,
Robert

Sounds like you had fun, its always great to get out in the B. Problems with long drives for me is my ass starts to cramp after about an hour or two in the B. solution..? I guess a cotton covered seat...;)
always wear a hat
if its a ball cap i cinch it down
i keep a pack hat ,, camping desert light weight thing .. pretty sloppy looking but it can velcro up on the sides and look halgf szzd ausse ,, with a string under my chin,,
ware the cancer on the brow..!!!!
I'm 6'1" and wear a baseball cap that I purchased at an MGB car show 15 tears ago. It reads MG and is the same color as my '67 B ( Pale Primrose ). It is the only cap that I own that will stay on against the wind pressure amongst the dozens of caps that I have accumalated over the years. I seem to be at just the right height to avoid having it blown off. Worst case scenario is that you will have to lower the seat. RAY
I wear fitted baseball hats from the American Legion baseball team that I work with and never loose them to the wind.
"1) Do you wear a hat when you drive and if so what type? How do you keep it from blowing off? "
I am 6' 4" but have no problem with losing my cap but I think the TF screen is a bit higher than the B's.
One way to not lose your cap that I have seen some guys use is two mini crocodile clips joined with a length of fishing line, clip one end too the strap at the back of the cap and the other end too the collar of your shirt or jacket, so if your cap dose fly off it is tethered to your collar.
I'm 5'9" and I almost lost my hat several times this summer until I screwed it down tight.
Glad you had a great day!
I'm 6'5" and wear a hat. My seats are old, so I sit fairly low. And I have the seats back as far as they will go, then reclined, which give me a little more room. Like the others, I push my hat down good.
I also have this thing that my wife bought at a show called a capkeeper. Jeff Zorn at Little British Car Company sells them. Its two clips on a cord. It attaches to your shirt collar and the back of the hat - if it blows off, the capkeeper won't let it blow too far.
You can see it in this picture:

Im 6'2" and yep! My head protrudes above the windscreen. I wear a wedge shaped cap like a Kangol style, but with the bill in front, the way its supposed to be worn. My favorite was from Duluth Trading Co. Its a oilskin wedge. Just skootch down and snug that cap down.
Like the holder/retriever thingie!
For long freeway journeys, I bought myself a 'tank drivers cap' at an army store about 30 years ago.
It can bused as a normal cap but also has protectors incorporated that can be used for ears and critical areas of the head and it has a chin belt too, that can be used on demand. It looks just normal when worn as a cap but helps a lot when whether is becoming colder or driving a long distance.
Now ya see? If you guys were normal-sized you wouldn't be having all these problems! :I3:
Glad you had the chance to enjoy the day, Robert. After all the lousy weather you've had down there it must've been great.
Robert I'm with you on this one! Wear a baseball cap the way its intended! I found a ball cap at a local professional sports clothing store where the cap has the elastic inside of it (one size fits all type). Its a little snug so I haven't had any problem at all. Before that, it was one hand on the cap, the other on the wheel. Whatever you get, just wear the damn thing right, What good does the bill do if its shading your neck anyway? I guess I'm "OLD SCHOOLED" and the older I get the less I understand. Lets not get into how to wear tatto or body piercing!
Congrats on getting out yesterday!! Looks like it's going to be a great day here in SoCal today and since I have to go in to the office for a bit I think I'll cruise in the B! Unfortunately, I won't be able to put the top down because I just re-colored it a couple of weeks ago and it needs to cure for six weeks.
Back to your question.......
I'm a short dude but I too have had problems keeping my ball cap on when cruising at 70 on the freeway, so now I just turn it around when on the freeway and when I get off I turn it back around. Who cares who sees you on the freeway anyway????? I've been thinking about getting one of those wedge caps with the snap down front but I think that I may still need to turn it around at freeway speeds.
Cheers!

Now is that a comment on MGB ownership or what?!!!
1) Do you wear a hat when you drive and if so what type? How do you keep it from blowing off?

A touque. Doesn't blow off. It's 10 degrees C today and I'll be taking the car for a last drive today before winter's nap.
2) How tall are you?
"
5'7" No leg cramps but my knee does seem to get abraised by something rough on the console... will need to look into that...
Always, always, always wear a hat. Skin cancer (melanoma) is not curable and the survival rate is only 5%! About 50K people die every year from it. Ball caps are not sufficient since they leave the ears exposed.
If you're concerned about losing your hat use a "cap saver" - a short, light cord with an alligator clip on each end, one clip attaches to your hat the other end attaches to your collar.
Two years ago my dermatologist found a lesion on my scalp. Two years of chemo therapy, the loss of my job, total disability, a family in turmoil - and still no cure in site - PLEASE! always, always, always wear a hat!
Heavy duty staple gun and 1/2" staples. Hurts a bit at first but you get used to it.

1. I don't wear hats or caps, as I've never liked doing so. I've got a full head of hair that does blow around a bit whilst driving the B. My 'do gets mussed up, obviously, but life's like that. The use of a comb and a dab of Brylcreem after arriving at my destination puts everything back in order. If, someday, I ever do choose to wear headgear, I will probably purchase something along the lines of this particular style: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_cap
2. 6'3" in socks. I'm slender, so folks tend to guess that I'm taller than my real height. Sitting upright in the B puts my line of sight directly at the windshield header bar. So, I lean the seat back a bit and scooch down a bit. Works out well enough. My seats have the original seat foam, so things will be interesting after I install a new interior. I've got plenty of legroom, thank goodness, and there's been no leg cramping yet.
This product is a godsend for me when the top is up and I'm sitting at a traffic light: http://www.lightinsight.com/

Well, I am not bald but I still like to wear a hat. I agree with John Dougherty. Also, I will and I know many others will include you in our prayers for a quick and full recovery!!
As for wearing my hat on backwards - no - I think it looks too dumb.
As for the heavy duty staples - tried that but my head is too hard and it keeps bending the staples. Ten penny nails do work!!
I think, and I am really surprised that no one has suggested it, but duct tape wrapped around my head might hold my hat on!!!
On a serious note, doesn't the Kangol style hat try to blow off too? I think the capkeeper that John English shows in his image is probably the best idea.
What I hate about tightening the hat down tight is that I end up with a big red strip across my forehead for several hours after I get out of my car.
Also, James, I LIKE the Light-n-Sight! What a great product. I wil order one tomorrow as I have same issue when my top is up.
Cheers,
Robert

John, glad to hear another survivors story! :spinning:Hope all else works out for you and your family. Your experience isn't falling on deaf ears! Good luck to you and your family.
If you wear a wedge cap backwards you may look like a manly old time race driver but unfortunately it's more likely
you will end up looking like that guy on "My Classic Car", particularly if you have a big mustache!

Rich

(Regardless, He does have a good site worth checking out!
Didn't want to steal this thread - thanks for the kind thoughts and prayers.
I like the staples idea but for those of us not into pain, may I suggest just a little "crazy" glue around the headband. It works great for the wide brimmed hats too - and the wide brimmed hats help protect the ears and nose.
That "light insight" device remeinds me of one I had on my 50 Pontiac back in the mid 50's.
It had one of those outer sun visors and without that prism there was no way one could see
the signal lights. Wish I still had that car. As to caps I never wear one and so far so good.
Maybe when I get older (now 78) I will but not just yet. And being short a long dirve in the
B is nothing. Very comfortable and we traveldded all over New England in ours multiple times
every year for at least 20 years. Manchester in June, Stowe in Sept., and Gerry Gougens in October.
It did get cold in October at times and we did have to scrape ice off the windscreen many mornings.

Oh good grief- the hat made for roadsters is a golf hat. I'm 6'1", and it never blows off. And BTW Basil, hats are made for old guys who have lots of luxurious hair and don't want it blowing in their eyes!
Yeah, like I am going to go out driving my car wearing a hat like this!!!!!!!!

And the answer is..

As was pointed out earlier, melanomais not to be trifled with. I went through it in 2007. In my case the cure was a scalpel. If you are comfortable loosing a piece of hide the size of your hand, as well as being on a first name basis with your oncologist, just forget about the hat. I was told to get a Tilley hat. It is somewhere in the neighborhood of SPF 50. It goes with my SPF50 shirt. Look at http://www.tilley.com/ and pick one out in the style you like. They have a heck of a guarantee to. Mine is made of hemp, so when I wear it, I guess it makes me a pothead. Beats the hell out of going back under the knife.

While I agree that wearing a ball cap backwards looks pretty stupid, it comes in handy when the hot sun is at your back.
Next year when I'm outta the mob I won't have that problem.
Hair down to my ass just like before I joined the airforce, 34 years ago. 'course It'll take some time to get there. Ahhh to be a long haired SG playing, airplane flying, hippie freak again. Paisley shirts and all.
In the meantime, I wear a Woolrich wide brimmed hat. Keeps the sun off my old ears and slightly balding pate.
Bob
Keeping Your hair cut "real close" acts kind of like velcroe.
I`m 6 ft one inch and with Mine hair cut off I never have a problem with the cap blowing off.
They say that you lose most of your body heat through your head.
It seems living Montana you would want as much hair as you could get for extra insulation...it gets COLD up there... B)

Tilley hats are guaranteed for life-period!
They brag that one of their hats was plucked off a wearer's head by an elephant who promptly ate it.
The hat owner, being a patient and non-squeamish fellow waited until his hat exited the elephant.
After a washing he found it none the worse for wear and continued wearing it.
