Hoping to take Baby down to the Gathering this weekend and I'd like her to look really good. Need some advice on best ways to clean my chrome wire wheels. Any and all suggestions appreciated. Gary

Q-Tips, lots of Q-tips, polish, followed by wax, and Q-Tips, lots of Q-Tips.

Gary.....I use Meguiar's chrome wheel cleaner. Just spray it on, wait 30 seconds and hose off.

I've tried a few wheel cleaners that were chrome-safe. I found Eagle One to be the best so far. I start with that cleaner then hose it off after however many seconds it says on the bottle, then car wash soap and a bottle brush bent into a bit of a hook gets between each spoke. The cheaper brush works better than the expensive one for wire wheels. It's easier to shape. Then once the wheel has dried off, Autosol chrome cleaner on blue shop paper towels and poking your finger into each nook and around each spoke. Do this step with the wheel off and sitting on a portable workbench or garden chair. Your fingers will hurt enough. No sense wrecking your back too.

I only did the chrome polish step twice last year. If you do that, the dirt seems to rinse off much easier for a few weeks.

JDW shared a little limerick that I think I'll be muttering next time I polish... :bouncing:

I have spoke wheels with alloy rims on my BMW motorcycle and polishing them reminds me of this old limerick.

There once was a man from Racine
who invented a f^%$#ing machine

It was concave and convex
and would fit either sex

But oh what a bastard to clean. ------------- 'Nuf Said?"

I should mention this will be the first time I have taken the car to a show. Last year while the car was in resto I went to a few shows and to be perfectly honest I was somewhat intimidated by the cars I saw. The guys obviously knew all the little tricks of detailing to show their cars in the best light. I know nothing about detailing a car. Wax on wax off is about the extent of my knowledge. The chrome wheels had me stumped as to the best method of cleaning.
I have arthritis pretty bad in my hands so I'm limited as to how much I can do, so John I know there will be no Q-tips involved in cleaning the wheels. LOL. The Mequiars chrome wheel polish sounds like just the ticket I need, and I thank you Bruno for that suggestion.
My biggest reason for taking the car to the show is to talk the other MGB owners to gain as much insight as I can in relation to the car 's care. This forum has already increased my knowledge 100 fold as to the mechanical side of repair and maintenance.
I definately expect to have this car for the rest of my days, and will pass it on to my oldest granddaughter when I pass, so I've got to keep it looking good.

I dunno. JDW always wins the trophy at car shows. He knows whereof he speaks.

Park next to me. I will spend 15 min washing and cleaning before I go and that's it..

Clean Wheels works great but is a bit expensive. Use a brush that is thick, but compressible so that when you go around the spokes, it "hugs" them and gets the back side of each spoke nipple nice and clean. If your wheels are really dirty or if you need them super clean, it's best to remove each one and clean it off the car. just be sure the splines are not still wet when you put the wheel back on or you may suffer rust.

Short of licking them clean I don't see you beating the zealous q tip guy.

Get one of those toilet brushes that are wound into wire and have really long bristles and a bucket of soapy water. A vigerous swirl one way then the other (don't be wearing a suit). Quick and easy.

With my first MGB a '64 Mk1 about 42 years ago, my preferred method was to remove the wheels and get my then girlfriend to clean and polish them. She did a great job too !

42 years on and now with the second MGB I don't think in my wildest dreams I would suggest that she gets down and cleans the wheels.

I clean and shine my chrome by rubbing a dollar bill on it. I have been doing that for fifty years and it works just as good as it did back in the day.

Gary,
Check motorcycle shops for Luster Lace procucts. They offer polishing strips you wrap around the spokes that are impregnated with a cleaner/polisher. I have used them for years on my Nortons and they work a treat.

But with inflation, you now have to use a hundred dollar bill.:D

Meguiares Chrome wheel cleaner works dor me, Spray it on, hose it off blow the water away with compressed air.

I use it on the spokes of the MG and the Cobra R wheels on the Pantera.

I've always like to use an old white cotton sock on my hand like a glove. You can get your fingers all around the hub and on the spokes. It works well to get all the grime off of them. Change the sock and use it to give the metal a nice clean look.

Good Luck, they look great when they are cleaned up!
