MGB: What Colour Is My MGB GT?!

Hi all,

I got my first ever MGB yesterday (incidentally my first ever car!) and for some reason I can't work out what colour it is. It's a 1976 CB conversion, and the colour is a light grey with a very slight hint of purple/blue to it. Here's a crappy photo that I've edited so that the paintwork looks how it does in daylight.

Please help, I need to get some touchup paint for it!

All the best,

Ben

Ben, that's a tough one. Could it be Mirage (BLVC 11)? Here's a chip chart that you can look at, just run the cursor over the chart and it will magnify the chip chart. I'm assuming thats the original paint and not some other color from another car like a Triumph TR6 (French Blue comes to mind). Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Definately doesn't look like an original colour, Ben. Can you ask the previous owner about it? What's the history on the car; rebuilt, restored, any photos of the restoration?

There's places on this side of the pond that can usually match a colour just by using a computer scan tool or such. Is there any thing like that in your neighbourhood or close by?

If you'd like some history on your car as it left the factory, the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust in Gaydon offers a certificate that will give you details such as build and shipping dates, original colour, trim, key codes, etc. You can find them here: http://archive.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/exhibitions_heritage_certificates.html

Congrats on a good-looking car for your first. Welcome to the forum as well. Lots of good folks and great information. Where in the UK are you located? Check into local clubs as well.

Cheers
Simon

Mirage was my first opinion...one of those very rare colours.

Looks great in person in my opinion!

I wouldn't count on that being Mirage since it wasn't available in 1976. Even if the PO bought paint that color for the repaint, it may or may not match paint you get mixed now. Best bet is to find a place that can computer match it...

Ok fair enough - thanks. It would appear I've bought a bit of a mongrel!

Don't start calling it names just yet, Ben. Wait until you start working on it for that. ;)

Regardless of what the actual colour is, it does look good. Pass along more photos. We like photos!

Its Mirage, same color as mine. Sometimes looks white, sometimes lavender, sometimes grayish. My car photographs white, but in the right light the blue/purple comes out.

If it's Mirage are you sure it's really there?

White, lavender, grayish - mirage - how can you be in three places at once when you're not anywhere at all?

I believe none of this is really happening.............or an elaborate game being played out on the kitchen table of a higher power...............:eyepop:
