Well, I traded some fencing for an "MG" motor. Checked it out in my neighbor's garage- in the dark. Dumb, but I didn't really care all that much..saw the ribcase trans and assumed it engine be a 1275. Picked it up tonight and discovered it's a 1098 high compression. Supposedly "rebuilt", but I won't know til I pull the head. It is complete, with dynamo, starter, carbs.... I have no use for a 1098- have two 1275's for my Midget. I figured I could use Mowog stuff more than I needed the fencing.
So the question is, what does one do with a 1098? I expect some amusing replies....but seriously... What parts are interchangeable? I don't think the head is. Anyone need it?
What good is a 1098?

In my humble opinion, the 1098 is a fantastic engine, in fact my favorite. Long stroke, good torque range, - not as buildable as the 1275 (or maybe the 948 for that matter), but still a great engine. I would be pleased to take it off your hands if only I were closer.
A 1098 is a monster! My Mini's A-series engine is an 848 and it does just fine. Yes, I notice the difference when I climb into my 1275 Sprite or my wife's 1798 MGB, but those little engines hold their own just fine!
Now, as far as what you should do with it? I dunno. Maybe put it in the Trader section if you don't have any use for it. Someone may want to put their early Sprite back to an original type engine.
i'll take it. i'm in roseville, about an hour+ away. i'll send you an email with my email adress. thanks.
Ron,
The 1098 is a popular motor in vintage racing... quite a few formula and sports racing classes have an 1100cc limit and the A series engine is a common starting point.
Back in the day, the guy who bought my GP Spridget didnt want to race it... he only wanted the two Comptune 1098's that came with it! He then sold off the chassis and spare parts.
See? I had no idea. As I continue to get educated, I discover that is the "desirable" 10CC with 2"bearings, etc. However, I think it would be of more use to a vintage racer or someone who wants to keep their early spridget more original. I'll stick with my 1275's.
I intend to pull the head and pan when the rains start (any day, now) so I can confirm whether it was indeed rebuilt( or not), and overall condition. It does turn over by hand, and was stored indoors, so that's promising. No idea of value. Opinions?
Kyle in Roseville- I'm actually near Coloma, so you're real close. Keep in touch if you're interested...Got any 1275 or, better, MGB stuff? I'm looking for a '68-71 MGB engine. Cheap.
Mike, you have two of my favorite LBC's. If I had those, I'd quit looking! All you need is a GT to complete the set....cuz it does rain sometimes in NC.
Thanks to all of you- this has been, and continues to be, an awesome community!
If Kyle doesn't take it (for any reason). I have a 71 MGB engine, most likely std,
I'd swap you for. Now getting it there?

Why is that the things you would buy are always two ot three time zones away.

If you are collecting 1100 stuff I have a 2" crank that is zero, zero and block (everything except head and rods/pistons) that you can have- when are you heading up to Seattle next?
BillM
Thank Bill, I'll do that. I do want to trade you something for it so......
Trading is the best!
