I ran two DIY cold air tubes- one DIRECTLY to my intake and the other facing the carb/headers.
Car SEEMS to run better, even more torquey. Downsides,
1/ my gas mileage is now horrible (I don't have numbers, just observations and comparisons to similar driving)
2/ backfiring, once or twice, thru the exhaust
3/ I am dieseling/running on at shutdown.
4/ one other....hmmmmm

One of you did mention this may be consequence. We adjusted and enriched my carb last week (all the way), I am running too rich now for the cooler air?
It is running too sweet to remove now. :(

(attached pic just show the original tubing)

I suspect you have twisted it all out of where it should be.

the carb should be adjusted according to the book.

air inlet should be very nearly irrelevant...at most a very slight adjustment, not "full rich"

there's your fuel consumption problem..and your failed smog test in the future.

fuel consumption issues can only be addressed with accurate records. "butt dyno" is worthless. this means written, this means filling (as much as possible) at the same pump, same brand, even the same number of clicks once the pump turns off.

t is common to get a full gallon difference in fill from one tankful to another, on different pumps. that has a major effect on observed mileage from one tank to the other but after 4-5 tanks full the variation averages out over the full distance--thus written records! in addition, some claim one brand is worse/better than others...so that has to be factored (included in your record) as well.

Hey Mac, what's up, again? :)
We adjusted my carb last week BEFORE I installed this CAI.
Did it because I was having hard starts and running a bit hotter, but it definitely is burning gas wayyyy faster now with the CAI...........or so it seems.

If you can just get it to idle well, get fair fuel economy, and rev to about 5000 rpm you are doing well with the original ZS carb setup.

If your carbs are set-up properly prior to the installation of your CAI, your mixture should still be correct . The mixture will not change unless you change it manually.

If you increase the volume of air going into your carbs with any kind of 'ram air' effect you will also increase the volume of fuel mixing with it because your carbs are designed to continue to provide the set mixture as the flow increases. This normally happens as the RPM goes up when you depress the gas pedal. The relatively colder air will also be marginally more dense increasing the fuel flow.

Whether the slightly increased fuel / air mixture density will make a noticable difference in performance through increased compression is doubtful.

Good to know, we may have just adjusted the mixture too rich.

Thanks all around!
