I just installed a reduction starter on my 1500. I got the car running and noted that a loud whim was occurring. I had a hard time isolating it and at first thought it was the new starter. I video with sound the motor running. When I listen to the video the sound seems much more isolated. Occurring at the front of the car rather than on the starter side. The video is at this location. Click here to download video (is 17mg so might be a little slow).

I would like to get an opinion of others on what this might be. Water pump, alternator or something else?

Thanks

Didn't down load the video, but I would suggest getting a metal rod then put one end on a component while the other is on your scull next to your ear. Just keep checking individual areas. You may be able to hear where the noise is coming from.

Hi Thor,
You have metal on metal that is for sure.
Based on the new starter install, I would start there.
Sounds like the bindix is not disengaging fully off the flywheel?
Sound travels so it's too hard to judge without being there.

What did it sound like B4 new starter or I guess the better question is "could you start it prior to new one"?

I'd put a ratched on the main and turn her buy hand to hear any odd scraping sounds (pull off the distributer plug wire first, don't want her to fire or you could be in a world of hurt)

Don't you hate it when you think you've fixed one thing and get another? <sigh> been there!

Thanks for feedback. I am pretty sure you are right about metal on metal and that it,s the new starter I put in. I really hate pulling the starter but will have to.

Do you think some sort of shims is required. Strange that was not even mentioned in instructions and that it was a simple swap out. I did notice that when installing the new starter the alum ring designed to allow nippondenso starter to be fully rotated didn't fill the entire opening inn the transmission bell housing, left about a 1/4" gap. I questioned the place I purchased it and was told this made no difference and just to bolt it down and it should be fine.

Here is the gap. I thought this was strange as won't water or any other foreign matter just get encased in bell housing and have no way out? I know there is a seal between motor and transmission components but seems odd.

If image doesn't come out its at this site towards the end of the page: http://www.visn2.com/Flash%20Website/1500_Ignition_System.html

appreciate everyone's thoughts on this.

I found out that the sound was indeed the starter not disengaging from the flywheel.

Keith from Gustafsonspecialty.com told me that the usual distance from the mounting area on the bell housing to the teeth on the flywheel (surface facing hole) should be just a hair over 1 inch. I measured mine and it was just under 3/4 inch which is way different according to him that the usual.

Now I need to figure out shim(s) to meet the required distance.

The angle left after mounting is binding the starter gear and the flywheel. The mount needs to be square, as these are "square cut" gears on both the starter and the flywheel. The starter engages, and remains "stuck".
