MGB: What's it worth ??

I am going to sell a 1965 MGB roadster parts car that I have acquired with one of my other cars. It has an overdrive and wire wheels (5). It is also complete under the hood but I have not had the motor running. No top bows, wrong seats, galvanized floors (done by P O) and basically needs most major panels. Gauges are all there. Any idea what would be fair to advertise this car for sale at? Thanks for your input.

The OD trannys worth more than the car.

Thats kinda what I figured but didn't really want to strip the car to pull the trans out. What is the early overdrive worth? Wire wheels are still fairly common to find?

Where are you??

Apr 02, 2003 18:55:34
Blake Sonnier

Yep, car and OD maybe $600. OD maybe $600. Car alone no OD maybe $400....

Gary, I am in Southern Ontario, about 60 miles north of Buffalo.

I gave $800.00 US for a running, drivable, '80 just to get the OD out of it. Of course I ended up with a lot of other spare parts too. If I was looking for and OD transmission, rebuildable engine core, and wire wheels and/or comonents I'd give that for your car just to get the few items I wanted. I don't want any of thet stuff now, but that's what it would be worth to me if I did.

I am in B.C. and would probaly pay $1200 to $1500 for it!! The overdrive is worth about $1200 cdn!! Of course, it will have to be 'gone over' and it could be toast!! Maybe a gamble, but I doubt it!! I would pay that if I had to!! Of course I would offer $500!!

Thanks Gary. I was kinda thinking in the $1500. CDN area for the car. Does the '65 originally have a 3 main bearing engine?

Your wire wheels aren't worth as much as the hubs and rear-end assm. That is if the splins are any good. More times than not used wires aren't any good. I'm like John the car should bring $800 US. Any more a good used head would bring $350. Parted out you might get over $2000.

It should be a 5 main engine and a 3 syncro tranny. Which the 3 sycro OD tranny are getting real hard to find.

Apr 02, 2003 19:35:31
Gary Lloyd

Nope!! It is the first year of 5 mains!! Those guys are saying $1200 cdn!! And they are both cheap! (just joking guys!!!) What I mean, is they want to make a profit off what they pay!! I personally think you are right in there!!

Down here, the first 5-main engines came in the last of the pull-handle cars, and so would have had the 3-synchro gearboxes. Most were titled as 64s, and some had little special plates attached next to the "VIN" plate. Others were titled as 65s due to when they were sold.
Just a local anomoly.
I buy parts cars for $300-$500, but like the guys said above, a banjo rearend for wire wheels and an overdrive puts you in a special class.

Looks like we all concur. About $800.00 US or $24,000.00 CDN. ;^)

No, really 800 US or 1200 CDN is about right a fair deal for buyer and seller.

Pretty soon if your economy keeps going it will be $1200usd or $1200 cdn!! Keep it up!! I love it!! :o)

Apr 02, 2003 20:20:07
chris roop

That would make life easier. Dollars should be dollars.

Apr 02, 2003 20:25:21

It's good for us trade-wise too. Effectively lowers our prices and begins leveling the playing field.

Well, in reality, as much as we hate it, it is a very real thing!! If the cdn dollar was on par, then there would not be a 'softwood lumber tariff', because there would be very few exports!! Also if the cdn dollar was on par, Chrysler, GM and Ford would shut down as many plants as they could in Canada because of our beaurocratic BS!! I guess then our economy would cool right down!! From what the experts say, the perfect place is somewhere betwen $.75 and $.80!! I will vote for $.80 to $.85!! I guess we are stuck there!! :o)

Hey John, any chance you can call my bank and tell them how

'your" exchange rate works and I'll sell the car in the U.S. for $1.00 and be happy. LOL Seems like I might be wiser to piece it out if I can get somebody to buy the trans. Has anybody ever made a trailer out of a parts car? I would like to see a picture of it. Seems like a waste to just scrap the body.

I'm in southern Ontario (Georgetown) and in the middle of puttinng a 73 back on the road. My budget is already shot for now, but if you still have the tranny in the fall, let me know; maybe I will have scoured up a few more bucks by then (if that od tranny works in a 73. anyone know?)

Apr 03, 2003 06:24:42
chris roop

It would work, but if it is a 3-synchro, it would be wrong.

Apr 03, 2003 06:25:04
Gary Lloyd

Stu, you wouldn't want to use that tranny in your car!! It is the older style, 3 synchro!!

Apr 03, 2003 06:26:00
chris roop

To make it work, you would have to change your backplate, starter, flywheel, maybe more.

Apr 03, 2003 06:26:26
Gary Lloyd

actually there is a trailer like that in Victoria!!

Apr 03, 2003 06:27:46

Nah, let's go with the buck. :)

There was a lilnk posted here of the pic a year or so ago. Maybe a search for trailer would pop it up.

&, I've seen another one that used just 1 car but had an exposed GT seat in plae of his front trunk lid where you could sit during car shows...or tie down a cooler

chris roop

If you part it out, I need a steering wheel, among other things.

Apr 04, 2003 04:01:00
Don & Joan Nicholls

Sorry it doesn't have the original steering wheel on it Chris. I will let you know if I take it apart That was a cute pic of the trailer but I was thinking more of removing the front end around the firewall area and then putting a little seat and table in it and using the trunk area opened up a ;ittle more for storage. But will have to sell the trans first to make any of it worthwhile.

I've seen a Midget-based trailer at shows here in the east, and on like Tony describies at a Cape Cod show a few years ago. The one in the pictures linked looks like an optical illusion! It really should have a late RB back end on one side, too, to set off the Mk I rear end....

(Gah, I hate to think of a Mk I being cut up like this.............)
