Looks like something to do with the fuel pump, front lower part protected by a black metal box. While I'm asking stupid questions, whats the purpose of the chrome levers on the seat backs between the seats? They look nice but dont do anything. I'm thinking headrests but they wont budge.

The levers allow for rake, assuming they're not frozen with rust. Try shaking the seat back and forth while pushing on the lever, but be careful! I was doing that and it broke. Sliced up my hand good.

You're right about the fuel pump. It's protected by a black box. Look on the other side, you'll see the fuel line going to the front of the car, and another going to the fuel tank.

The Black cover is a protector for the SU fuel pump. If you have anything other than a SU pump the cover is useless.

The levers are to adjust the seat back position and after 25+ years sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.

BEWARE of that black metal cover! The fuel pump can rotate and the hot wire can short out against the cover! It fries everything, don't ask me how I know!
