Hi,

I have this ticking in the engine that sounds so much like tappet noise, i thought it was, i kept adjusting the tappets over and over,,, cold, hot running, idle, but I still have this tapping sound. it does sound like its coming from around number 7 or 8 tappet, but maybe its underneath there. any suggestions on what that could be. Would the OVER tightening of a tappet make the same sound as a loose one?

cheers again
tim

It could be that your rocker arm shaft or it's bushings are worn.

It's probaly because you have a badly worn cam lobe. No amount of ajusting will get it out. The lifters should talk a little but if you have one louder than the rest, that's a worn out cam lobe. All you can do short of replacing the came is live with it. If it's bad enough, you will see it when you turn the engine through by hand. The rocker on the effected lobe want open the valve as much as the others.

I have a noise on my 77 like that at #1 and I am sure it's piston slap... New cam and most everything else but I did not rebore her, honed and re-ringed.. Got about 10K on her now and the sound is always there but no worse.. The sound mostly goes away once she is warmed up good.... She uses no oil at all, even on 80 MPH runs to new Orleans and Dallas...
Not saying Tom's not correct just that some noises are just annoying more than destructive...

Well piston slap is a term used a lot, but I have never really met an engine with it!! It implies that the piston is slapping back and forth in the cylinder, right?? How long would that last in reality?? Anyway, I may be wrong, and I am sure somebody will let me know!!! smiling smiley They always do!!

I'm with you Gary. I've never heard it or seen the results of it, but I wouldn't think it would last to long running at 80MPH.

Well crap, Whatever it is I ain't fixin it......Yet..

I thought piston slap was when a piston was a little lose in the bore....New rings old bore right at the limits for re-ringing....maybe a wrist pin then... Whatever it is it goes away when she gets hot. I run her up to 6K from time to time and nothing flew apart...

How bout a weak valve spting???? Would that do it?

It's not a piston pin or it would clatter on decelleration only, especially whe it first starts making noise. I think you pegged it with piston slap I've seen cars run a long time doing that, and my old Lawn Boy mower has had piston slap for 15 years and is still going strong. The Tank has piston slap when cold and I ran it 10 hours and 45 minutes straight yesterday on an auction run. It sounded the same this morning as it did yesterday.

The 77? Yeah I rebuilt her... Just didn't rebore her.... You know an overhaul?
Head, bearings, rings, cam, timing chain, lifters. And the oiler in the rods are aimed at the cylinder wall not the cam.....

How do you know that it is piston slap? If it is slapping back and forth in the hole, it will break pretty fast unless they are made of some super metal that I have never heard of!! I think piston slap happened in the days od the 2000 rpm Pontiacs! I doubt it happens today or 'specially in a 2 cycle that is probably turning 5000 RPM!!! Anyway?????

Yeah that's it Gary I had the old pistons Teflon coated so I didn't have to buy new ones and I could be sure and have piston slap and not blow it up.....That's the hard part.

Did ya get the pass....?

I have a similar noise. I was told by Matt at Brooklands that my rocker shaft is worn and should be replaced soon.
