I'm still trying to figure out the mystery of the M-G-B badge on my trunk. If you have opportunity when you out this weekend take a look at the underside of your trunk and see how many posts are coming through from the emblem. I have four holes, the new emblem I got in only has two and it does not cover the other holes. The original badge was missing when I got the car. Many thanks!

Got a picture of the badge that you have on hand? Front & back?

I don't have a picture but I did make a crude drawing of what it looks like.

The upper holes are a bit larger in diameter, but my drawing is close to actual size. The octagon is below those holes.

Oh. Silly me. I didn't clue in that you were talking about the MGB badge, even though that's what you wrote! Another "Senior Moment"!

Anyway, sorry, I can't go and measure for you. The only 'B I have here is a '73 without the badge. I've got a '66 & '67, but they're 100 miles away.

Thanks Derek,

I wouldn't be as concerned if I hadn't just had all the paint and body work finished. I am hoping there is a badge out there with four posts instead of two, I don't know what I will do if this was a PO modification. Having to send back the trunk lid to fill two holes gives me nightmares.

Maybe the three piece octagon has four posts, shows correct for a '69. Moss part #470-698, might call and see how many posts it has.

I thought about that and really that would be the best answer I could get. I like the three part octagon, but doesn't it also have the MGB logo above it?

Just checked the boot lid on my '74 - - The MGB badge has 2 posts and the MG Octagon has 3.

My '73 has 2 posts on MGB and 3 on octagon as well... fwiw.

This is sounding bad.

I fitted the 3 piece octagon to my B and beilieve it has 11 or 13 posts - I can't recall but it was a LOT!

Just looked at a couple of my Bs. The '69 has 13 posts for the octagon and large MG letters. The small "MGB" badge just has 2 posts. I also looked at my '74. The Large plastic badge has 3 posts. The small "MGB" badge only has 2 just like the '69.

It looks like you have some extra holes.

Cheers,

Rob

Thanks guys. One can only wonder what the PO drilled the holes for.

Air holes for the mother-in-law?

Any chance they are the two bottom holes for the chrome octagon outline?

I'd plug the 2 extra holes from the inside with Bondo and put a drops of touch up paint in the holes from the outside until it's built up pretty level. Mount your badge and drive it for awhile (or forever) and see if anybody besides you notices. At least till next winter.

Just put on a Twin-Cam badge.
That will get people wound up!

I'll bet my trunk lid has more holes than anybody else's!

Bill, thgis is what mine looks like. from the underside, the 3 in a triangle are for the MG badge, then 2 by itself for the MGB logo.

Maybe a long-gone dealer logo? They used to do crap like that. I remember my dad's old 53 Plymouth had a chrome "Hampton Motors" drilled and mounted on the trunk lid...

That's funny Jack! But why would the mother-in-law need more than one hole to breath from?
