Hooking up the rear harness to the rats nest I found a green with brown stripe that does'nt appear to have a matching connector. Does it go to the double Green with red stripe connector or to the double white connector?

Green/red and green/white wires go to the turn signals.
Green/brown wires go to the reverse lights.
Wiring diagrams are available at http://www.advanceautowire.com click on stock schematics.
yes this is for my 78. And the wiring dia does'nt show it clearly - just shows red wires .

Have you looked at the diagram for '78 and later from Bentley in the link I provided?
Dan's diagrams are easy to enlarge.
Red wires go to the tail lights and the marker lights. Green with red stripe wires go to the turn signals. Green with white stripe wires go to the turn signals. Green with brown stripe go to the reverse lights.
Where is the junction you pictured above located in the car?
Kim, the harness is located foward of the wiper bottle on the right side of car. The dia i was looking at is for "mgb late models" I'm going to find one for 1978 only that may help.
Dave hang in there !!
Kim is right on with the wiring. What diagram did you refer to? The one on page 25 from Bentley or the one on page 32 from Haynes? They both give a clear view - especially when you hit the enlarge button a few times.
If you want madness, pick up a copy of the Haynes workshop manual and check out the schematic for later N. American models.
From the rear of the car, you should have these connections:
R --> Running lights
G/P --> Stop lamps
G/R --> Left hand flasher
G/W --> Right hand flasher
G/N --> Reverse lamps
G/B --> Fuel gauge sending unit
P --> Boot lamp
W --> Fuel pump
G/N is also used in a one other place in the car, between the heater switch and heater motor that I am aware of. Then, there is the LG/N used on the flasher and turn signal circuits. But I digress.
Check to be sure that the other side of the G/N has not been folded back under the harness or clipped off just even with the end of the harness (speaking from experience here - you just got to love the DPOs sometimes).

If it helps at all, I have one or two unused wires on my '74 B roadster which are not currently in use and haven't been for years, and they look just like that wire--a short stub ready to plug into a connector with no obvious connector to plug into anywhere. There may be a few 'extra' connections coming off the fuse box area that were designed for other purposes. Don't know that, but I've never found anything not connected, and I have looked.

Not a marker light, marker lights have red wires.
It will be for the reverse lights or the heater fan.
