I've noticed that the lining on the bonnet is stained with oil at the back on the drivers side. It covers about a quarter of the lining.
I've put on 5,000 km's since August and have used 1 litre of oil. There are no major puddles on the floor.
Would it be safe to assume that I need a new valve cover gasket? or is that where I should start?

Given the location, I suspect its either the valve cover gasket or possibly a crack in the vent hose from the valve cover to the charcoal canister. Both are cheap and easy fixes.
