My current speaker console is a homemade attempt by one of the previous owners, but I want to get an original one. Which of these 2 types will it be, as they are similar but slightly different? I guess mine is the older 3 synchro type as it is a 1966.

I dunno. The top pair and the bottom pair look identical to me...

You have a 4 synchro one, that is all. You should be able to find a 3 synchro one over there in the UK.

Maybe James knows something I don't. Of all the early and late ones to come through here, I never noticed a difference in the plastic portion. However, there were variations in the surround as well as the grille itself. Which belongs to which year are beyond me.

The all look the same to me. The one in my 66 looks like the first single one.

He is in the UK. Over there, they had the same style console carried over into 68 and later, whereas the US spec cars had an entirely new console to go along with the pillow dash and wider transmission tunnel. Look at his first photo. If you have ever had an early console in your hands before, then you can tell that his is actually wider at the sides than on an early one. This is because it is for a 4 synchro car. It looks very similar, but it is actually wider. For his 66, with an early tunnel, he would want one of the bottom ones, because they are the narrower version.

The single unit in the first photo is for a 68 and up car with 4 sychromesh gearbox. The second photo has 4 units in it which are all for pre 68 cars with 3 sychromesh gearboxes. You can tell because at the bottom right hand corner of each unit is a step, which fits around the removable transmission tunnel cover. The speaker grills look the same but I think the early one is more rectangular and the later one is squarer from memory.

Very good James! I see that now, had never thought of it before! That would also be the case with the Canadian entry 68s then.
