I'm not off to a very good start (no pun intended). Just drove my '74 B about 75 miles back from the restoration shop Sunday.Shortly after I got it home I washed it, carefully washing the inner fenders and heater box (very gentle water spray), not touching the engine or alternator. Then, while cleaning the interior, I noticed the ignition key was a bit sticky to get out and put back into the ignition switch, so I took a spray can of "One Lube" put the red straw into the ignition switch key opening and liberally sprayed the lube into it. A few minutes later when I went to start the car I got nothing. The red light on the dash came on and stayed on. Even when I turned the key off, the red light stayed on. Even with the key removed the red light stayed on. I disconnected the battery cable and pushed the B into the garage. Later after I charged the battery same thing (the red light on the dash was a little brighter!)
but turning the key still gives nothing. Any ideas what I did?

Is this 'one lube' safe for electrical connections? probably shorted out the ignition switch.

Im with Scott on that. As far as keys go only graphite should be used. As far as electricl contacts only contact cleaner which evaporates completely. Most all penetrants are oil based...kerosene mostly. The british call it parafin for good reason...it lays down a tacky messy goo....NOT good for either keys nor electrics.
Might invest in the spray contact cleaner and see if you can undo the mess....LEAVE THE BAT DISCONNECTED...

Blow some compressed air in key hole.

With luck you may blow away the residue.

Then clean it with above mentioned cleaner spray, then graphite it,

Actually the electrical portion of the switch is removable once you take the cylinder assembly off the steering column.

It's on the left side and might be worth taking the cladding off the steering column and getting some contact cleaner in there.

I would DEFINITELY unhook the battery.

If this fails, I believe I have a ignition assembly hiding in my garage, don't know if it's proper for 74 though.

I believe my manual says not to lubricate the ignition switch

Thanks very much to each of you - this is my first post (most likely of many more to come).

I have access to compressed air and I also have a spray can of contact cleaner at home, so as soon as I can get a ltlle garage time I'll pull the steering column cover and clean out that ignition switch.

Appreciate the help !!!
