I have a toyota corolla that looks real nasty, but it has a real good engine. It's a front wheel drive. My question is:can this eng.be bolted to a rear drive automatic tranny??Or is this a waste of time? Frank

It's popular as a Midget or Bugeye swap.

No really easy answer other than, yes. A rear wheel drive trans can be fitted to a front wheel drive engine.

But . . .

You'll need to do some serious homework and choose your parts very carefully. The Toyota trans came with removable and cast in bell-housings, electronic and vacuum operated components, two or three different series trans that would work well, but each has a factor or two to consider and overcome when choosing and installing. You'll also need to double check your engine mounts, they'll be in different spots than those on a rear wheel drive engine.

Just a ton of things to consider before jumping in, you know. Too many to list, and more discovered along the way.

I think the 80's Corrola's were RWD. The T50 5 speed out of one is used to convert FWD engine to RWD. So a automatic from one would have the right bell. The best one is 84-87 Corrola SR5 4 speed auto with lockup torque converter.(A42DL)

Frank, it all depends! Yes, many Toyota engines were offered in RWD configurations so they would bolt up to a RWD type transmission with the correct flywheel etc. You might and probalby would have to change a lot of the engine accessories such as water outlets etc to line up with a RWD installation instead of a FWD style. Also some automatic transmissions are a bit wide for the tunnel and may require some surgery in that area.
