Anyone tried to upgrade to win 7? I bought a new computer with Vista on it and have a free upgrade in the mail BUT I am seeing some sites where people are complaining about how they can't get it to install and can't even get back to Vista. This was SUPPOSED to be the Windows we have been waiting for(For 20 years!) Now I don't know if I want to chance it. Has anyone put 7 on their vista machines? How did it go?

After buying into ME in favor of 98 and saw how Gates and Company pulled it support after continued crashes I won't buy anything new from him or his again. I am now quite content with Office or whatever was before Vista and recall that almost every time they enter the market place with a new program it is trouble filled. Sort of like the R&D is up to the customer....very bad biz IMHO. I would have thought by now someone would have come up with a reasonable uncomplicated understandable nerd less system beyond MS and Apple and Linux....I am still hopeing.....

I upgraded a Vista machine but I installed it on a newly installed harddrive and have a dual boot. This way I can slowly migrate over data that we need while still having a clean install.

My current laptop has XP Pro on it, and I'm happy with that for the most part. Except the laptop is on the brink of self destruction (thankfully I have backup on an external hard drive). So, I searched for a new laptop....and just about all of them come with Windows 7 now. Since I have to be compatible with the main office, I need Windows XP/XP Pro. What I found interesting is that they make you pay extra to downgrade from Windows 7. Oh, and by the way, my new laptop will be a Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad. Can't wait, this thing is driving me batty (which I am already, so I don't need any help there!).....

I just bought a new XP pro on ebay for less than $70, that may be cheaper than their downgrade price.

I think most of the horror stories have come from people "upgrading" a pc with vista already installed. While it may be possible to upgrade, Microsoft actually recommends doing a clean install to a formatted hard drive.

Actually, the downgrade was $ 30 - not too bad. And I can eventually go to Windows 7 when everyone in the main office does.....

I had absolutely no trouble upgrading my PC that had Vista already installed and am glad I did it. 7 is what vista should have been.

That's good to hear, how long did it take I have seen reports of up to 22 hours to install.

Robert - the newer versions of Linux are not only easier to install and use compared to Windows, but come on a LIVE CD that allows you to try it BEFORE you install.

Let me know if you're interested and can send you (legally even) a copy of either Ubuntu 9.04 or Mint LInux & (based on Ubuntu)
