Don't know how it happened but I got the glass installed in the frame with no real problems, by myself. I had Everything cleaned and clear coated and ready to go together for a while but kept putting if of till today. Started at 11am and was done by 1pm. Bout time something went smoothly on this project.
Have been embarrassed to tell anyone but I had to send the car back to the paint shop to fix a screw up, there was no paint along the underside of the rockers so I took it back to them. Went to pick it up Thursday and instead of blending the paint as they said they were going to do they decided to just paint her up to the chrome trim and the whole front cap. They didn't call to tell me that's what they were doing and the trim and side markers and headlights had been installed. They didn't take the 1/2 hour of work to remove them and instead taped the damn things off a painted the lower part of the car. Needless to say it will be done again. I took off the side markers and trim along with the rest of the lights. How stupid can some of these paint guys be. They knew damn well I would not stand for any part of the car to have tape edges on it......now they got my car and my money. Sure wish I had looked under the rockers before I accepted her the frist time

WTH… they now should at least redo the whole thing right... at no charge

Even if they did do some quality masking on the trim/lamps they almost certainly spent more time than needed to remove the stuff they masked!

I hired one paint job done in my life. I could still dig up the long since dead SOB that did it and choke him to death again. I have never in my life felt that way about anybody else for so long.

I feel you pain. My car was supposed to completed weeks ago and I'm ready to throttle the guy now. He's had the car since the first week of January and now I'm hoping to have the car completed by Memorial Day weekend.

Yep, feel the same way JDW..... They have one more shot at it. Then whatever the deal if it ain't right I'll eat the loss and take to someone else.... Wonder if he has fire insurance......

John, everyone on this BBS told me that my car would take longer and cost more than I ever imagined. They were right. It seems to be a general theorem that applies to restorations irregardless of what shop/guys are doing it.
My car was supposed to take 3 months and could have been done easily in that amount of time. It's been a year and a half and it isn't finished yet. Close, but not finished.
It's frustrating. Don't get too crazy when deadlines are missed. I've missed most of mine.

I have one body shop I use. They know what I expect and do very good work. I have had over a dozen cars painted by them and never had a problem. As for your windshield Blake, the easy parts over. Let us know how well it went on putting the frame to body seal in, and installing the frame to the car.

If you get your car back, check out Skye's front page for the clamp trick to mount the windshield assembly. You can do it by yourself and easily, compared to the two men and a boy method.

I never set a deadline on a thing like that. It takes as long as it takes if you do or not.

WOW!!! Tom, I didn't think that was any where near as hard as that stupid transmissin mount!! Did I miss something???

I was on my body shop owner's ass like a short overcoat every day for a week and finally one of his painters volunteered to fix the job because he felt I got a raw deal too. I went in a couple of evenings and helped him with it.

I would say that is a sign of the times!! People really don't have a lot of pride in their work anymore!! Most things I do myself!! But, unfortunately, lately I have had to hire a lot of things out!!! It is OK, but a lot of things are not done up to my standard!! It is weird!! I am a general all around guy, and specialists don't do as good as I do???? Wazzup with that???

I would rather do half a dozen rear tranny mounts than one frame to body seal.

It's a deal!! we'll swap of Tom!! You fly me to Memphis and I will fly you to Victoria!! Good deal huh?? :o) Seriously, I must have been lucky on the windshield and unlucky on the tranny mount!!

Was the frame together when you installed yours?

Apr 19, 2003 21:20:31

I took the frame apart and replaced the glass and then I put in all new gaskets re-assembled the frame and then re-installed it!! I don't know, but it wasn't bad!! Maybe fly Blake and I to Memphis, and we could have some fun!!!! :o) Seriously, the frame went on easy, even with the new gasket!

Guess I am lucky, along with Tom, asked around for a while and came up with a guy who won't accept anything going out of his shop that's not right even though he isn't a "restorer" and doesn't get "restorer" rates, though he did do some Jags for a Jag Restoration Company across the street from his shop. Repainted the car on his own when the Pale Primrose Yellow came out a little too green the first time. Part of it is he has had the same guys working for him for 10 years that actually do the painting. He says that is the critical part. Having people in the business for a long time and work in the same place. Also probably helps if they do some restoration type work and had to deal with picky and PO'd anitque car owners a few times.
