I have a 77 MGB Roadster, with single ZS Carb. Carb. has been converted to manual choke. Most of the EPA emission equip.has been removed.Motor starts and runs great. Oil pressure reads about 6.5 to 7.5. However it uses a lot of oil, above 45 MPH, when you give it gas,I get a black cloud behind. Could running rich cause it to use oil? I just ordered tool to adjust Carb. I am not a car mechanic,
should I use local mech. or go
to MG specialist for overhaul?
What should be replaced? Any help appreciated.

I to have a 77 roadster and would not take the car to what I have come to call an american butcher(mechanic) the car is usually to simple for them I have several DIY books which give precise instructions and offer many tips shortscuts but for any of the complicated work I take it to a mechanic that works exculusively on MG's we are fortunate to have him in town

I would absolutly recommend you use a mechanic who specializes in British cars. I have seen allllllll kinds of rigging done by so call mechanics. The new car mechanics don't know what to do if they can't plug their computer into the box. Kind of like the parts clerks that work at the auto parts stores of today. If they can't bring the part up on their computer by typing your car make and model in FORGET IT. Believe me it's going to get worse.

presume you've checked for external oil leaks and fixed them, to cure oil consumption replace valve seals, this means removing cylider head to get at them if you're not able to do that then recomend local garage, since it's relatively simple job no specialist mg services needed.black smoke causes increased fuel consumption and reduced power without increasing fuel consumption significantly. hope this helps you.
