I'm fairly new to the site....been reading a few months but just joined a few weeks ago to offer some advice.....hope now that I can get some. I've worked on cars my whole life and I have a degree in electronics but this thing has given me a time. I have a 76 and a 79. The 79 in way better shape, I swapped engines among many other things. No problems. I liked the chrome dual gauges in the 76 so I changed them also. Ready to start driving but decided I need carpet. Two weeks later carpet is done and ready to drive. I start the car and smoke starts boiling from the Ing. switch wires. Must have after market switch because the colors don't match wiring diagram. I have traced..searched ....hunted.....rechecked all my prior connections for a short but all I came up with is........2 white wires coming from switch...1 to the coil and the other to the fuse block...second fuse from top.....removed the fuse and all is fine with the Ing wiring. Tested the three green wires opposite of fuse and 1 goes to wipers...reconnected and works fine. The other 2 green wires opperate my gauges n turn signals..I've been over this thing for three days with no luck. Any suggestions before the fire starts? Me or it.....

Jesse,

If your down to gauges or blinkers, you have to rule out one or the other.

Problem sloved. Hey Dave, thanks. I did that and found nothing. I did find out that my brake light switch was stuck, not the problem though. I traced every green wrie in the wiring harness. What I found was that the PO had connected the Ebrake switch wires leading to the seat belt. I know the colors change in the harness after some connections but Green / Green n Orange didn't look like it should be connected to Yellow N Brown / Black.
